The new Power Mac's support 8 displays

Now that, my friends, is friggin cool. Can a PC do the same with an extra video card?

I was arguing with the guy at the Mac store about this. I swore I read it somewhere but he did not believe me. But it is true! I do not know about 8, but with the price of these 17" LCD's I might go for FOUR. That would be so cooool.

this is possible on PCs too. I'm sure everyone's seen the gigabyte motherboard running 10 displays (8 from PCI-express cards and the other 2 from a PCI card)

There are cards that have 4 and 8 VGA ports already, so you can do this, and you can do it without filling up all your PCI slots.

Regardless of any arguments about exactly how many displays it can support, I like the way that Apple is pushing ahead [some think a little too] quickly with the full-scale adoption of PCI-E. Hopefully this will motivate some companies (especially ones with a sizeable portion of their market in Mac users) to bring out more PCI-E peripherals; that can only help those of us who are wondering what to do with our "excess" PCI-E slots.

WTF would you need 8 displays for? Are all Mac users ridciulously rich, or do they just enjoy throwing money away?

Apple doesn't sell only PowerMacs. People buy PowerMacs also for other features than the multi display support. For some tasks dual/quad/whatever displays make sense.

Captain Obvious away! 😉

I know, you only have one head, right? I think people could realistically handle 3 or 4 monitors at once, with 1 or 2 being a better choice. I guess I could see it for video survelliance...

PC's have been doing this for years, especially in the financial/trading business. It's not uncommon to see 4,6, or 8 monitors in use by traders. Matrox has been one of the key suppliers of this capability.
