Obviously, Slag, when you go out once, and are frustrated and can't perform the athletically coordinated moves required to perform an adequate golf swing, you must rag on the sport. It isn't a terribly aerobic sport I'll admit, but try to play 18 (or 36 holes) walking, carrying your clubs, concentrating and maintaining a good swing and tell me it isn't a sport.
It takes terrific timing, flexibility and hand-eye coordination to be a great golfer, all of which I would consider athletic skills.
As for the luck/skill thing you mentioned, luck is a part of any sport, as is skill. Referees make wrong calls (lucky for one team), crazy bounces of a ball can determine the outcome of a basketball game etc.
You confuse strength with athletic ability. Tell that to gymnast and figure skating phenoms.
And as Melty said, you're ragging on my favourite sport ... ah heck off. :|
Im not confusing anything. Strength is an athletic ability as is flexibility and the ability to do complex gymnastic routines. That requires a high degree of physical ability which makes it a sport.
Face it, I love working on vehicles and it takes a certain amount of skill/luck to be successful at it, but it doesn't make it a sport because there is no athletic ability involved.
Same with golf. Its a past time and time/money sink for some, source of relaxation for others, but its just not a sport. Tennis is a sport because the athletes are running around the court all day hitting a moving ball and having physical exertion. Baseball is a sport because it requires excellent hand to eye coordination, base running, etc. Basketball, soccer, football, etc all have athletes who compete based on endurance, physical fitness, etc. Golfers dont have to try to catch the ball, throw the ball, or run with the ball. They hit a STATIONARY ball down the course. Much much much less degree of hand to eye coordination than any of the other real "SPORTS" mentioned above.
Golf has old people and young people alike, regardless of physical ability, standing in one place swinging a club for about 2 seconds. They then walk or ride to the next hole, rinse and repeat.
I'm not bagging on golf, i think its great for some. Several of my friends love to go drink on the golf course and waste away the afternoon having fun.
Its still not a sport.
