I predict a collapse of Google. They are a search engine. An incredible one at that, but nothing more. Unless they can leverage their success into several others, they will fail as all companies that based a revenue scheme on advertising will. They are simply a glorified version of Alladvantage when you boil it down - merely the most succesful of the advertise-as-revenue companies. It won't last long. Sure, the founders will be richeyond their wildest dreams, but it doesn't mean that a viable company exists.

I don't predict a collapse, but I do think their stock will be massively overvalued upon its initial release and will eventually (maybe a year or more later) see a correction to a more realistic level as investors realize there's only so many areas they'll be able to effectively branch into. Yahoo has pretty much shown what is and isn't viable in this area. Google will be able to offer their own unique wrinkles for sure. But as I said previously (and as you're saying) the core to what they are is a search engine. There's nothing wrong with 'settling' on an already proven business model, especially if you do it well and it makes money (and both Yahoo and Google are raking it in hand over fist right now.) With more and more companies pouring money into advertising on these sources (my job is managing ad accounts on Google, Yahoo, etc and our budgets only keep increasing as clients are pleased with the results) they have the possibility to enjoy strong, sustainted growth if they don't get overzealous and forsake their core business trying to develop new areas.

Yahoo, Google (and MSN's various properties to some extent; they're also working on their own search engine) are in the drivers seat to become the online equivalent of the major TV networks (and eventually see the resulting advertising dollars) if they play their cards right IMO.

We asre all forgetting something here, something that puts Google above all other search engines, and that is...the page cache, many times I have used that cache to find the exact place of the exact words that I am looking for, it is the most useful tool of anything. I don't care what else they dabble in (although images in adwords might be annoying) as long as they keep the page cache
