Well, if you think SFAM is their best work, and you like the new one... well then I don't think I'll bother checking it out.

<goes to listen to Awake>

Awake is excellent. I love all thier albums... But you dont like SFaM? What is wrong with you. That is pure musical perfection! BEST ALBUM OF ALL TIME!

I like Awake better than Octavarium though. You gotta love 6:00, Erotomania, Voices, Lie, The Mirror, Space Dye-Vest.... All awesome songs 🙂

Yeah, I really don't like Scenes much at all. The whole vibe of the album just doesn't jive with me. And the concept - if you're going to have a concept album, the concept itself shouldn't be lame. It should also be a bit more subtle, IMHO. The first and last tracks are immediate skip-over tracks for me.

Are you kidding me??? The last track has the best ending to a song EVER! Those drum fills are amazing 🙂

released on the internet? what are you talking about? The CD is being released on June 7th, and judging from Mike Portnoy's posts on his message board, there is no way any average consumer is going to hear it before then. So what do you mean, released on the internet? If you found the songs through a file-sharing program, the band has seeded them with misnamed copies of James Labrie's solo album, Elements of Persuasion and that's what people are thinking is the new album. Since you mentioned the 24:00 long song, however, that makes it seem like you did indeed hear the new album. Bastard 😛

Yea man, a lot of people mistook EoP by James Labrie (another awesome album) for Octavarium...

The real album is on the internet as we speak. Grab it and give it a listen, and then buy it on June 7th to support this amazing group 🙂

gay as in happy?

No gay as in Dream Theater!

Fixed.

Thats not even funny... So tell me what do you call music? Please LMK so I can laugh my a$$ off 🙂

Well I just went out and bought it. Only listened to a little bit because my speakers here at work suck ass, but it seems really cool. I've been reading the discussions on mikeportnoy.com and it seems there are a ton of subtle little allusions to other songs in the CD.

Octavarium is not their best album, but it is not their worst.

Awake is probably my favorite of their albums...the metal goodness of Images and Words, but with the arrangement and musical sophistication of their more recent albums.

After Awake, I probably have to go with Disk 2 on Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence...some people don't care for their concept album work, but I saw Dream Theater live when they toured Six Degrees...it may not sound hard on the album, but their live performance gave me a whole new appreciation for Six Degrees.

Next, probably Image and Words just because it was the album I discovered Dream Theater with.

Fourth on the list comes Metropolis Part 2...as others have pointed out, the concept in their concept album was a bit dull, but I found it amazing how they managed to take Metropolis, and essentially craft an entire album from one song...the nuances of how parts from one song appear on later songs, and how James changes his vocals to represent different "characters" in their metal opera.

Next up, Change of Seasons just for the title track...and the live covers are good.

Train of Thought and Falling Into Infinity are their weakest albums IMO.

Give me some examples of who you guys like instead of Dream Theater...

But please dont say Hoobastank

I used to like DT, but got really bored of their overplaying (and that's when I can ignore the lead singer's whiny voice). In the prog field, I like Genesis, Yes, PFM, Van de Graff Generator and Iconoclasta. The closest thing to prog metal I like is Porcupine Tree. I love King Crimson, but calling them prog metal would be a insult IMHO.

If you like DT, then more power to you. No need to feel that you have to justify it (by LOLing at other people's musical tastes).

Pink Floyd, Led Zepplin, Deep Purple, the Beatles, Jim Chroche, Creedence Clear Water Revivial, Janis Joplin, the Who, 5 Man Electric Band, Three Dog Night, etc.. I'm getting tired of listing band better than your piece of sh!t. 😀

tool has some great songs that are long, one of them being " third eye "

ive never listened to dream theatre, but i do like pink floyd, tool, and misc. other bands. but those two being popular with " epic " songs.
