The NEO Project: MD5 Attack

Actually this project does seem to have a worthwhile goal. Still, though, I can't help noticing that they still have plans for the XBox project.

I never did participate in any Neo project, so I'm not bitter. I just think that they should try to stay on the legal side of things.

I did NEO for a while but am now one of the "bitter" ones...

I have no problem with crypto. projects... actually, I believe they are some of the most interesting

BUT

I do think it is important that anyone participating be aware of the "not-so-up-&-up" side of NEO.
I normally would never talk a DC project down, but with the XBox thingy still an underlying goal
of this projects' creators..... Let the buyer beware!

Other than the possible legalities of the Xbox thing, is there anything about the neo project we should know?

not that I am aware of...

I bailed pretty quickly when they updated their client to include the XBox hack.
and really haven't done much homework since then. (I guess I'm not as forgiving
as I could be)

It ran pretty well and really didn't have any problems beyond what is seen in any new project
as it develops.

my best suggestion would be to give their site a good browse and skim over their forums.
I know TallBill was trying to head it up at the time... you might drop him a line

Ditto what Insidious said.

I'd also add that its not just the Xbox legal questions that has left Neo the only project I actively argue against running.

For a previous crypto project they decided to reset the stats out of the blue, then decided to vote on it, then claimed the project was solved by someone else when apparently it hadn't been.

Judging from comments on the Neo forums, they did not understand the mathmatics involved in that crypto project. (I will give them credit for asking for help after that, so perhaps there is solid math behind the MD5 project.)

I think I'm more untrusting of Neo rather than bitter at this point.

Sounds more and more like a script kiddie plot to crack passwords...

exactly, they appear VERY unprofessional and perhaps INCOMPETENT to run a DC project

I did some calculations on how long their (original?) RSA crack would take, and it looked really impossible. There is a way to maintain their goal of monte-carlo testing while cutting the time drastically (basically the same algorithm used in ECCP - distributed Pollard Rho), but they didn't use it. So I wasn't willing to waste my time.

I just don't like the questionable legality of the Xbox thing, plus their incompetence, and their attitude towards some of their users (there was a thread on that a while back, it may be in the archives around here). Plus, the whole resetting the stats and "voting" on it, and the only keeping inactive accounts for 30 days, and the other sh!t that they tried to pull - all of that doesn't sit too well with me. Sorry, but I can not recommend, and will actively recommend against, anyone from Team AnandTech running the Neo client for any of the projects they run.

Well they posted something earlier about the legalities of the xbox project, and under some DMCA clause or whatever it's legal as long as something something.. I don't remember. At any rate, you also have to understand that the probability they will crack the private XBOX key anytime within the next few years is close to null. It's a 1024bit key... And the way I see it, by the time they do manage to crack it, it'll be completely irrelevant as XBOX Next will most likely be released by Microsoft.

Anyway, I do agree with some of the comments. I noticed the neo project as soon as the xbox project started, and to be completely honest, it's only because i read xbox-scene that I knew about it. I'm not there for the xbox project anymore, I feel it's hopeless for them to try, they'd have to be incredibly lucky to find the key anytime soon.

Also, a short update on rankings.. Team Anandtech is now ranked 11 🙂

I'm sure if just a few people want to help me we could get to number 1 rather quickly. Then again, they might reset stats out of the blue again.
