Hi all -

I've got a hardware problem that is just completely stumping me. Here's the setup (it's actually happened at various times on two computers, but this is the current one).

AMD XP 1700, Abit KT7A-Raid MB, Windows 2k sp3 with all patches shown on thw WindowsUpdate site. USR internal ISA 56k Sportster Fax Modem

Now the problem. My modem keeps disappearing. Win2k claims it's there in the Device Manager, but whenever I go to use it, each and every program can't find it. The fix is simple but very irritatiing. If I delete the modem from Device Mgr, reboot, and let Win2k redetect the modem, all will work fine until the next reboot.

I don't think it's the computer. This exact hardware has been working just fine for the past 17 months, under Win2k. I did a reformat/reinstall of everything this past week, so I'd think that it should be cleaner than ever!

I don't think it's the MB, because this exact problem also happened on my Dell XPS-R PII-400. Same fix, and same frustration. I don' think it's the modem, because I have two of these puppies, and have tried them both.

It has to be Windows somehow screwing up the detection of the modem on subsequent reboots.

Any thoughts? Guidance? Advice to toss the whole thing out the window? :)

Thanks!
