The "Must See" Sights in the US

So, I've considered couchsurfing across the US this summer. Any destinations that I absolutely need to visit? I haven't had the opportunity to do something like this until now, and I figure why not? I think I am going to start in NYC and make my way around the US.

Any travel tips or travel destinations appreciated.

Thanks! :sun:

I'm a host in boston, last person I had was from paris.

PM me if you end up doing this, I'll vouch for you on Couchsurfing. You're not a serial killer right?

Yup, I am a member there and am working on establishing friends across the US. I am also currently going through the verification process. No... not a serial killer, lol. Just a regular 22 year old guy looking for some adventure in his life.

I'm unbelievablely excited to do this!

ditto, I shall let you surf my place in MPLS if you decided to stop by...just search vivithemage on there.

I do plan on going through Minneapolis, for sure. I think I am going to start in NYC and head down the coast. Stop at the Jack Daniels factory 😀 then visit a few friends. Also plan on going down through Atlanta. I don't know if I want to do Miami or not? I haven't decided. Anyways... from there, work my way back up to Chicago, then to Minneapolis. Then stop here at home for a while perhaps (Nebraska), then move west.

I guess even if you suggest some nightlife type of stuff, I"d be down. I'm alway down for going out and meeting new people. Thats probably the #1 thing I'm looking forward to.

Hopefully I can take this on a world-wide scale in a year or two.

The GF and I couch-surfed in Luxembourg and Brussels this past summer. Have yet to host anyone over here though. There is a rather large and active community where we live now.

I believe our account is under my same username here--I haven't been to/updated our page in a few months though. Look us up and we'd be glad to host if you find yourself in the Bay Area.

Plan to spend some serious time in CA:

Giant Coastal redwoods up by the Oregon border
San Francisco - soak up the sights and great food
Redding, CA - Lassen Volcanic National Park

Arches, Monument Valley, pretty much all of southern Utah.
Badlands National Park (get out of the car and walk, it makes a huge difference in how much you see).
If you go to Badlands, you might as well see Mt Rushmore as well. There is no better place to find the average American.

I was going to post that of all places to avoid, Mt Rushmore should be at the top of the list. Such a ridiculous waste of time and money. (saw it this summer for the 1st time). As far as seeing the ave American there, you are correct. Except that the gift store is staffed by teenage foul-mouthed Russians.

I was just thinking about this the other day. Couchsurfing.com eh?

Yeah, it looks pretty legit. Everyone on there is pretty nice and very into community gatherings and whatnot. I think it will prove to be a great way to get around the nation on little coin. All I plan on bringing with me is a backpack with a few extra clothes in it with a laptop and a camera. Okay--so the backpack will be pretty big, but hey, I have to document this somehow 😀

Funny... I've seen Mt. Rushmore before when I was a kid and was very unimpressed. I also believe I saw Crazy Horse? Lame. I have also been to the badlands, and it was sorta cool. Its cool to drive through, thats about it. Never been to Utah. Hope to find something cool there, though. I've never been to the West coast, regardless. I plan on spending a lot of time there 🙂
