7-21-2004 Mich. City OKs Amplified Islamic Prayers

The City Council unanimously passed the amendment to the noise ordinance in April after a mosque asked for permission to begin broadcasting the Arabic chants, traditionally issued five times a day.

"The church has been doing this for years. This is not calling people to prayer. It's (giving) the time of day,"

"They're trying to make it a big deal, but it's not," he said. "If you go two or three blocks, you can't even hear it."
-----------------------------------------

Hmmmmm, let's see, a Church bell rings 12 times, it's Twelve O'clock - Prayer chant varies by time all over the place.

Yep, they're the same alright  :disgust:

Obviously you are uninformed. The five calls vary in time because Muslims use the lunar calendar. They are a time keeper b/c Muslims pray five times a day. They are a call for prayer in so much as they let people know what time they need to pray and have nothing to do with prosletyzing as you seem to be suggesting.

the difference is... Church bells dont call people to church. they give the time, and are used in celebration like when i was in germany when the germans won the world cup. Every fricken church bell in the country were going off.

Agreed, but the Muslim call for prayers is only used to notify Muslims that it is time for them to pray. It in no way attempts to invite people in to the mosque to become "Muslimified" as Cowen seams to be suggesting. It is really nothing more than an alarm clock of sorts.

You obviously know nothing about Islam. The call for prayer calls MUSLIMS to the mosque to pray at the CORRECT time. It is not an invite of any kind. Besides, it's in Arabic, are you suggesting non Muslims are going to try and figure out what it is saying and then go to the mosque to be "Muslimified"?

Lets solve the whole problem. Both church bells and these islamic calls prayer are annoying. Lets do away with both.

Hahaha, I agree, I just get annoyed with "Islamophobes" (or any "...phobes" for that matter) who have no idea what they are talking about.

I can hear the bells from the local public school at 1pm calling them back from lunch even though I live more than 2-3 blocks away... does that mean those are offensive too?

Well for starters, you ASSume wrong, I've worked side by side with a ton of Muslims with the Prayer call that pops up on their Laptops and in addition to their smoking breaks, take these breaks as well where they go and place their rugs on the floor and all pray together at these times.

So apparently we now must have these "Calls" blaring atop every Mosque built now huh???

Listen to yourself, the ton of MUSLIMS you work with go and pray, who else is getting "Muslimified"??? (haha, i love that term). And are the calls being broadcast on every mosque? Michingan has one of the largest Muslim populations in America, they had a vote, they got their way. Calm down buddy, no one is going to come to your house and force you to convert.

If a mosque chooses to have a bell informing its followers when to pray, how does that affect you in any way? If you're not a muslim, the calls will mean nothing to you.

I heard the Call to Prayer five times a day for quite some time, and it didn't turn me into a muslim.

These Mosques are getting built in every neighborhood in the Country whether there is a "large" Muslim population or not. Let's see how you feel after one is built a few houses from your house and you hear it all day long day after day.

That's my point exactly, Cowen just seams to be having a hard time understanding that.

Not only is there one close to my house, I've lived in Malaysia and Saudi Arabia (cant get any more calls for prayer than over there). That's why I think you're being ridiculous. It's irritating, agreed, but there is no "Muslimication" going on, as you suggest. If you're not Muslim, it is nothing more than an annoyance, JUST like church bells. And where are you getting this whole "These Mosques are getting built in every neighborhood in the Country whether there is a "large" Muslim population or not"? Do you have any statistics or is this more Islamophobic paranoia?

"These Churches are getting built in every neighhorhood in the Country, whether there is a "large" Christian population or not. Let's see how you feel after one is built a few houses from your house and you hear it all day long day after day."

Again..what's the difference between a church bell and a mosque's call to prayer? So, following your logic, I should go complain because I have to hear a church bell go off every hour? Please. I'm a christian, but I don't see how a mosque ringing a bell is intrinsically more disruptive than a church bell.

Didn't anyone tell you guys? Good christians everywhere are under attack and America is in jeopardy of being taken over by pagans and deviants! We must prevent these foreign influences from corrupting our impressionable youth! The only propaganda they should be receiving is ours!!

As long as a church bell or a call for prayer doesn't wake me up before 7AM or 10AM on the weekends, its fine by me.

in my books they are the same, noise pollution, each sunday at 10:30 and 13:30 the churchbells go nuts for about 30 minutes, on special occasions its longer and more often

two personal experiances
1. An ex girlfriend used to live near the biggest church in iceland and at that precise time the bells went off. Impossible to sleep when that happens. That church is also expecialy anoying because the bells play a tune every 30 mintues.

2. A friend of mine lives right next door to another church, about 100-200m of empty space between them. When the bells go off there its impossible to even talk to someone in his apartment.

Good lord, talk about bitching just to bitch. It rings for what 5 times for maybe 30 seconds? I hope you don't live next to any schools, fire departments or the such then. Give it a rest Dave.

heh, reminds me of when I lived in an apt complex that was right next to a fire house. Not only that ~50 commercial jets passed overhead every hour.

Though I got used to all the noise. Except for one, the first weds of every month they tested the public emergency sirens. Thats the most annoying noise ever.

If it involves as many virgins as I've heard, Muslimify me, baby!

I do want details, though. Is the Shia Muslimication ritual markedly different from the Sunni? I've heard it's more rigorous and includes significantly more Muslimifying. Will we soon hear the young, hip and Muslimified saying things like, "You can call me anything, my delicate be-burkahed oasis flower, just don't call me late for morning prayers." With Muslims taking over, will the term "religious rug" no longer refer to Jim Bakker's hairpiece?

Lastly, I can't wait to hear the Dub tackle pronouncing "Muslimication". Handicappers, what do you think the over/under on extra syllables will be?
