There's a big difference between counting calories and being anorexic. Being fat is so normal now you can be a normal healthy weight and friends/family think you're sickly skinny. People just have no idea how to eat. They grab the processed sugar loaded fat free diet food then wonder why they're still fat and think to be skinny you must have to stop eating. Eating real unprocessed food solves all that, I can eat how ever much I want that way. My old ladies chubby mom is always your so skinny you need to eat. While my girls always trying to tell her you don't understand this son of a bitch has to eat every 3 hours and stuffs his face hes ridiculous and drives me crazy with eating. I just won't eat her pizza, doritos, combos and other garbage so she thinks somethings wrong with me.

Look no further than a lot of posts in this forum

Even worse than food, it's more likely the muscle guy at the gym is taking a boatload of questionable supplements, if not illegal/dangerous performance enhancing drugs. When one of these guys has a health crisis and comes clean, the list of chemicals they have consumed chasing "The Gainz" is mind boggling.

Also, look no further than a lot of posts in this forum, to see how much people chase magic bullets in snake oil supplements. Where it probably starts before escalating to the drugs.

Body dysmorphia is a real thing and very prevalent in men. Chronic undereating is a huge issue while not as widely named or described as anorexia or bulimia. Similarly, OCD compliance to diets, while not probably strictly categorized as an eating disorder, is certainly a mental illness when taken to extremes.

ugh, just a vain stab at "gender equality" . . . can't have one gender being the sole sufferer of some ailment  god forbid.

People are mean and they throw proverbial daggers to others, often during their youth, that ultimately distorts their perception to point the brain itself starts misperceiving things. So, an anorexic will not see themselves as thin or even think their are still fat despite going under 90 pounds.

On visceral level, an eating disorder is a perversion of pursuing reproductive fitness. The girl/woman believes she is pursing physical attractiveness with lower weight while the boy/man believe getting extremely "jacked" will make him attractive. Food is not the only way disordered thinking happens. Some cultures value big butts, and thus people keep getting illegal injections so their ass grows larger but remain unsatisfied in aeternam.

Fat and meat has been so unfairly demonized it’s kind of pathetic. When a disordered individual comes across such information, they go to the "solace" of carbohydrate-only foods. Vegetables and fruits are mostly cool, but it also means white bread, white rice, etc are deemed safe and healthy to eat with impunity. Well, newsflash. Hormones affect hunger and the rise and fall of insulin creates a reliable cycle of hunger.

Food industry makes bucks from sales and carbohydrates from flour and other sources gets people to eat more in many ways. They toss some B1 and B2 vitamins in wheat flour-based products so no overt crisis manifests itself from constant, repetitive starch eating.

Some of the factors of health are matters that are asymptomatic and not visually noticeable or indicated by muscle size or figure, which is predominantly a protein and work matter. Bones are asymptomatic matter where the necessary vitamin and minerals needs to be consumed constantly.

Girls are more sympathetic characters on a visceral level too. The pass down the species and and usually have to bare the responsibility of raising the offspring. thus need the best male. Whereas males are a commodity and one that drops out of the pool can simply be replaced by another.

Last thing, I find it interesting that the article mentions that the lanky nerd build is somehow desirable....

But it's not the sole province of women. My mom, a retired nurse who dealt with eating disorders, can attest to that. Now, these disorders tend to disproportionately affect women due to societal pressure, but that doesn't mean we should ignore male cases.

Part of the problem is that men are led to believe certain things just don't happen to them, like eating disorders or sexual assault, so they avoid help or harass men who seek that help. It fuels that misguided "men are never weak" machismo that can destroy a guy from the inside.

My dad has a gluttony problem - but being disciplined type, counters it by starving himself for a few days. you know, to justify his gluttony during his eating days. BUt then he gets woozy from the serotonin rush of sugary foods, and sleeps off and on all Monday. I think if he were a monk, he'd self-flagellate.

It all started when the doctor told him he could stand to lose a few pounds. Thereupon he got enamoured with and convinced of the spiritual+health benefits of fasting. He despises fatness. He's never been overweight - and now he resembles a concentration-camp escapee - ok maybe not thaaaat bad. I don't think you want to enter your senior years all malnourished.

But overindulging isn't so much a disorder as it is understandable. It's purposely starving yourself that defies logic and amounts to a disorder. Or that's my guess.

And yes this whole masculine notion of withstanding punishment leads to guys not caring for themselves.
