I liked it. As a kid I always went nuts for those battle bots that could fight in a ring. Never got that toy, but the movie reminded me of it.

I love the shit out of robot upgrade games/movies.

Pacific Rim is another one that I was in fuck yea mode the whole time.
 
Wasn't there a now defunct show on the same premise, except that it was real?

Looked it up, and it was Battlebots which had a short run in 2000 till '02. I guess the bots were not anthropomorphic enough to appeal to a wide enough audience, or we had not succumbed to the mind numbing initiative enough at that point to be entertaining.
 
I liked it. The whole sports drama and washed-up guy turned good father feel-good story is played out as a genre, but it still pushed all the right buttons. I think they could make basically the same movie over and over again but tweak the plot a bit with different actors and settings and it would always work on me.
 
We took my 9 y/o nephew to see it and he loved it, no doubt that's why I liked it more than other similar films.
 
Heh, I still remember when it came out...some friends were extras and they found a screen cap of when their heads were in the crowd. 😛
