These kinds of things always remind me of a couple of Rippetoe quotes:

“It would be good if some of you people learned that comfort and ease are not often associated with progress and accomplishment in any endeavor.”

"Most of the problems with the bodies and minds of the folks occupying the current culture involve an unwillingness to do anything hard, or anything that they'd rather not do. I applaud your resolve, and I welcome you to the community of people who have decided that EASY will no longer suffice".

Yes, it's real. Unfortunately.

"Let's face it: there’s only one way to burn fat and it doesn’t involve magic or miracles. You must take in fewer calories than you need to maintain your weight. But that’s easier said than done when hunger strikes. Dr. Sanford Siegal, a practicing physician based in Miami, Florida, known to generations as the Cookie Doctor®, created his famous Dr. Siegal’s COOKIE DIET® diet program and hunger-controlling meal replacement cookies and shake beverage mixes 35 years ago. Dr. Siegal’s foods contain his proprietary amino acid mixture that results from the blending of various protein food substances. They satisfy hunger without drugs and help you stick to a reduced-calorie diet."

M-hm. Yours for only $1.43 a cookie.

I tried Atkins, it was pretty retarded. Good concept, watching carbs, taken way too far.

Most of the mega-supplements you find being sold at GNC and most big name gyms are retarded, wasteful, and usually unhealthy too. But its a multi-billion dollar industry.

i never studied that too much but the idea should be to get your body in ketosis and bodybuilders have been doing that for a long time before mr atkins made it popular. I personally like john berardi's way of watching carbs.

They usually don't, which is why people say they always fail. If they'd switch to something reasonable after they finished they wouldn't gain back the weight, but they always go back to their old habits. I've gone on some harsh diets to lose weight (never a gimicky one though), and when I stopped I still tracked my calories a bit and haven't gained anything back.

I like how the third one they're like well it's actually not unhealthy just hard to follow... so why is it on the list to begin with yet alone the third?

4. The Martha's Vineyard Detox Diet

The regimen alone explains why this diet is both dangerous and bogus. The diet is meant for the short term, "lose 21 pounds in 21 days," where the dieter survives on highly nutritious cocktails, a short list of raw vegetables, and soup. According to the itinerary for the Martha's Vineyard Detox Diet Retreat, dieters enjoy a breakfast of "detoxification cocktails." Hourly cocktails follow until lunch when an assortment of raw juices are available. Dinner is slightly more filling, with the option of nutritious soup. The bottom line is that surviving on nutritious cocktails and juices will only deprive your body of the nutrients it needs. Also, the minute you begin to eat normally again, the weight will pack back on.

It boggles the mind that if someone has the time and ability to subject themselves to such diets that they don't just simply eat healthy... It seems easier to me to eat real nutritional food 3-5 times a day than to starve myself with liquid intake hourly.

The way many of these diets prey on people is that either they're marketed as being temporary or people view them as such. People don't want to change their lifestyles for the next 30 years, but they will for the next 30 days. Regardless of how far-fetched, ridiculous, and difficult one of these "diets" is, people can handle that as long as they know that 31 days from now they can get a triple whopper extra value meal...with a diet Coke :).

I did it for 6 months.

For all the shit-talkers: It works, but its a bitch. Like many diets its central point is that you dont cheat. And since theres a list of about a thousand common, everyday items you cant eat or can only have in tiny amounts, thats pretty difficult.
But it did work for me. I got tired of it cuz I was always tempted to cheat and couldnt stay disciplined. And really thats the problem with any weight-loss program: Discipline.

As one of my nuero professors put it: "The problem with Atkins is that he wasn't an neurologist. The diet might help you lose weight but it interferes with neurotransmitters". That's pretty much my problem with it: The way the diet is designed it interferes especially with serotonin's active transport across the blood-brain barrier.

The terms "cheat" and "discipline" summarize the problem in a nutshell. That is the message society sends most dieters - that they lack control, that it is somehow ALL their fault. Nevermind the fact that people have trouble making commitments of all kinds because it doesn't fit with who they are, nevermind the fact that they've tried a bunch of fad diets that rarely work for anybody (forgive the generalizations, but if you're Italian or Hispanic, how exactly do you expect Atkins to work for you?).

The key to successful weight loss is finding the correct combination of diet and exercise that works individually, not trying some one-size fits all solution. The fact people regain weight even after undergoing the most radical surgeries shows how deep-rooted the problem is. You also need plenty of support for the long haul - because that's exactly what these weight problems are: chronic problems requiring lifetime fixes. The sooner we realize as a culture that obesity has more in common with diabetes and alcoholism (also conditions that require lifelong adherence) than the common cold and stop blaming the victim, then the sooner we can get around to fixing the problem.

It's really not that surprising. People become incredibly desperate to lose weight. They may also be pretty depressed at the same time. If you constantly got messages that people thought of you as a worthless, lazy, low-value individual, and eventually came to internalize the messages of negativity, it's easy to see how that might drive you to seek out quick fixes. A lot of people who struggle with their weight endure a constant stream of negative messages from family, media, friends, culture - everywhere.

I don't know if it's retarded but I eat a lot more basic/raw foods now (fish, vegetables, fruit, roots, nuts, grains) and avoid processed/packaged/boxed junk and especially steer clear of refined sugars.
