Unknown Star Trek Security guy.

They KNOW they're going to die... but do their jobs anyhow.
Like the token black guy in movies.

Naw, the TBGs always whine.

The OST security guys never whine... except in the episode in which Spock and crew were stranded on a planet in a shuttle and giant furry men were killing them.

Wasn't the guy that whined in that episode the medic or something? I thought he had a blue uniform.

The episode was The Galileo Seven.

I think the whiner was Lt. Boma.

Yeah, he whines, but so do the two gold shirts that are with them. He doesn't count because he's a TBG and he lives. 😛

Gold wasn't security in TOS.

It wasn't?

In TOS, Gold was Command, Red was Security, Engineering, et cetera. In TNS, Red became Command, Gold became Security, Engineering, et cetera. Blue was Science and Medical in both series.

I show two guys in gold shirts on the guest star list, Lt. Gaetano and Lt. Latimer. I seem to recall Latimer being a whiner, but it has been years since I saw that episode. Only two red shirts along were Scotty and Yeoman Mears.

Funny Family Guy spoof of the phenomenon Amused mentioned: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9MLZBFOQ5tc

Oh, they both whined. Gaetano was beyond whining and practically mutinous along with the TBG.

The creatures must have killed them starting with the biggest whiners and were working their way on down.

That may be the only TOS episode where more Gold Shirts died than Red Shirts. 😛

Haha the IT folks have respect when the network is down. Everyone wants to hang them but will wait until they fix the system.

I know. They lived. 😉

Just got done watching a trailer for the remastered episodes of TOS with the new ship effects and such. For once in my life, I actually wish I had cable. 🙁

Kind of ironic that the remastered original Trek series looks better than TNG since when they remastered TOS they had the original film they used to work with, whereas the TNG sources were allowed to degrade. I don't know exactly what they used for TNG, but I believe I read somewhere that it was some sort of magnetic media.

I had no idea they were doing that. Seems kinda bad... like remastered Star Wars.

They didn't do anything like Star Wars where Greedo shot first. They just did things like made some extra scenes of the Enterprise orbiting planets, firing phasers, et cetera from what I have been reading. I believe they said they had only three or four entire shots of the Enterprise orbiting a planet that they worked with over and over when they made the series.

The remastered ones are shown on G4 I believe.

I'm voting teachers because no other professions tends to have such a strong desire to do something of value to society for so little freaking money.

I chose doctor because that's what I am, but I think I'd put firefighter up there if I was voting for real. I was an EMT in college too 🙂

i think its how you define respectable.

Are we saying respectable on the basis of how smart they need to be and that the amount of skill they need to have to do the job is so high that one must give respect.

Or are we saying that it is respectable on the basis of there intentions and what the outcome of there work is.

On the first one I would pick A Surgeon or Doctor.

On the second one - inner city teacher, charity worker

As I remember from the news, the military consistently comes out on top of the most respected professions in the US in national polls. I agree, but I'm biased as well. The sacrifices demanded of the military far exceed those of the majority of other professions. Case in point, in a couple weeks, I leave for seven weeks away from the family. Then, in June, I'll be gone for another two weeks. And that's mild compared to the folks who leave for 6-18 months on combat deployments and then turn around and do the same thing with less than a year back in the States. Plus, most people in the military don't make all that much money and have to move every 2-4 years.

I dunno. It all looks like a video game.

None of the above, alot of these occupations offer the pretense of being respectable.. but

Lawyers, Doctors and Politicians in general deviate from the respectable lot frequently.

Car sales persons are about as crooked as they come.

About 50% of teachers are respectable.

Telemarketers? 'Nuff said.

Police and Law Enforcement? No thanks, sometimes I think leaving the interpretation of the law in the hands of some half wit imbeciles is asking a bit to much. 75% of cops are great, the other 25% ruin it for the rest.

Pretty much narrows it down to engineers, it professionals, and landscape workers? Its hard to go wrong.

Have to pretty much agree. I've found those last, especially IT to be the easiest to take at face value. I've met and known too many doctors to say I have all that much respect for them. However, I remember hearing a long time ago that doctors generally get the nod when polling the general public.

For me, the single most respectable job is being a fire fighter. They put their lives on the line to make sure you get out of terrible situations with your life. In an emergency, politics don't matter. It doesn't matter if you are a criminal or a priest. They do everything they can to get you out. Everything gets sorted out after. (To add to this, paramedics/first response go hand in hand with the firefighters)

Police are a close second for me, but I've met way too many police officers who are just really big assholes on power trips that think and act like they can get away with anything because they are in a position of power. Unfortunately, that ruins it for the officers who should have just as much respect as any fire fighter.

I wanted to say that I am SO very happy that priest/reverend/minister was not in that list. It rightfully should be considered absurd and fully unrespectable claim respect based on knowledge and study of superstition.
