My new Soundblaster Live! Platinum 5.1 is REALLY starting to piss me off. Instead of writing out a long strung out story I'm just going to go straight to the problem. Anyways, my Live! is giving me sh*t everytime windows is loading (winme). This sometimes happens maybe 2 boots after installation of the card/drivers/software, or even days or weeks. It is very odd. After the splash screen disappears and windows comes up I would get this error:
"Msgsrv32 has caused an error in devcon32.dll
Msgsrv32 will now close"
Sometimes this error will pop up only every now and then, and MOST of the time it will come up just about ALL the time. The thing is, I think windows requires Msgsrv32 to run and after I hit okay (the only choice), windows does NOT continue to load and I am forced to reset/restart my computer. Recently this error has been annoying me oh so much b/c it happens so DARN FREQUENTLY. I would be sitting there restarting my computer about 35 times before I finally avoid the error and windows actually loads. Sometimes I would sit there restarting and restarting for about 30 minutes straight until I get fustrated and decide NOT to use my computer. Then I would come back and do it again for another 30 or so minutes until it works. I've tried reinstalling the drivers several times, I tried deleting devcon32.dll (in which all sound gets rendered useless), and I HAVE EVEN RESORTED TO Reformatting my hard drive! ARGH, I have spent WAY too much time on this. Does anyone have any idea why this may be happening or how I may possibly fix this? PLEASE HELP, I am AFRAID to turn off or restart my computer!

If you can, try changing slots. I read somewhere here on Anandtech about Bus rendering being a prob. with certain chip sets. Worth a try :)

Ha ha ha .... sorry.
I had this problem too, though not with SB. It was the Hollywood+ card. Short of reinstalling windows I tried everything. Sometimes when you start up and the error doesn't pop up, and you get so happy. And then you can keep resetting and it would come up every d@mn time. I finally gave up and put the card in another computer.
So MS must've kept the bug from the transition from win98 (which I was using) to winme.

My motherboard was a Abit BH6, what's yours?

argh... well, at least I'm not alone. Anyone actually finally fix it? I might try switching PCI slots later, but that's going to be a pain in the arse. Oh and I'm using a CUSL2

switching pci slots didn't fix it for me. Like I said, I've tried just about everything I can think of (even getting another card).

Whoops, heh, I meant reformat... defragmenting makes it sound so much less dramatic!

maybe it's windows ME i had problems with ME...but maybe not...
did you see if the irq conflicts? or if something is shared with it?
did you try it on another os?
did you update the drivers using the ME drivers in creative's website?

This same problem happened to me at work the other day.
Reformatted a lady's computer and installed Windows 98 on it...so far, so good.
Installed the sound card drivers and restarted...MSGSRV32 error...damn.
Since I couldn't change the PCI slot (Sound was onboard) I downloaded the latest drivers and installed them and now everything works fine.

I'd go go into the device manager and remove the sound card, then restart and load the latest drivers. Hopefully that'll work.

Boot into safe mode and clear out the old unused drivers.
Its a drivers conflict.

Changing pci slots has been known to help with other conflicts for SB Live, but try disabling DOS emulation driver loading OR manually assign irq5 for ISA in your bios, which the dos soundblaster driver emulator is looking for. Hope this helps.

I agree with Madrat, Its a driver problem. I get that now and then when I install a new card over a new one. Usually before removing the old drivers..

Okay here's the update. I called up Creative and I was told that the Live! card combined w/ an Asus motherboard and an ATI video card (don't ask me why) will NOT work unless in the 3rd PCI slot. I'm going to check that out and see if that works. I'll give ya'll the update afterwards

Did they also tell you to insert the card while standing on your head and whistling, under a half moon? If indeed it is an Asus/ATI/Creative problem, that will be the queerest thing I've ever heard. Hopefully they're referring to some driver interaction, but the 3rd slot comment implies it's a hardware issue. Weird.

Yes I reformatted before and DID reinstalled winme! And NO there are currently no other driver's for the live! 5.1 other than the one's that it comes with. I just switched the soundcard to PCI slot 3 and reinstalled the drivers and guess what... I'm getting MORE SH*T!!! NOW I'm not only getting the old error, I'm getting this on top of it!:
"Cmdninst has caused an error in User.exe
Cmdninst will now close"

I had the same problem also after I added a Promise Ultra66 to the mix, the SBLive was running fine before the Ultra 66 was added. Moving the SBlive or Ultra66 to different pci slot did not do squat. Setting the SB16 emulation to share resources with the lpt port fix it right up. I had to boot into safe mode to change the setting and its been working ever since.

Raincity has the plan down.

I am runing a KT7-RAID with every slot full (SB Live Platinum 5.1, Studio DC10+, Studio PCTV Deluxe, Kingston 10/100 NIC, Adaptec 29160 SCSI card, 8mb Matrox G200 PCI - AND a 64mb ATI Radeon VIVO AGP) and once when I first installed the live 5.1 I got a few errors also, I found the LPT sharing fix at Rage3d radeon (seems its a Radeon conflict because tons of Radeon users have this issue regardless of platform). SO

Boot into safe mode goto SB16 Emulation, properties, click on the last box that says LPT Interrupt sharing. Now reboot.

Hopefully this will fix your trouble it did for me and I can put my Live anywhere I want (i should know since I have had to move it a few times lately due to some cabling issues(SCSI card cables). Becareful if you do move the card because it can lose the LPT sharing inbetween card moves, but if it does that just go through the same steps as above.

Good Luck
