I think it's just that the cameras weren't as good even 10-15 years ago as they are today. Most of the lap records at the circuits still raced on were held during the V10 era, which was only a few years ago, and the modern V8 powered cars are very nearly as fast now...at least on the tracks that haven't had major renovations which changed track layout.

Spa and Monaco should never be fucked with again. Those two tracks should always retain their current configuration and they should always remain on the F1 calendar. It sucks that they shortened Hockenheim IMO, that was another great track until they cut out those long straights through the forest.
