Man, it is just great honestly to see more and more people coming to this accurate conclusion that both parties are totally poisoned by corporate money. Only when we hit critical mass of this belief do we stand any chance of seeing a revolt against lobbying on a level required to oust the majority of the corporate whores in Washington and replace them with politicians really for the people.

I've posted in many threads calling for an end to all lobbyists. That's the first (actually the second step) to start ending the Corps rule over our government. The first would be to repeal Citizens United.

Lobbyists are specifically protected by the first amendment.

Isn't that the one about FREE SPEECH? Lobbying isn't about FREE at all, it's about MONEY! It started out as a good idea and has been perverted and corrupted by the greedy.

No, it's the one about petitioning the government for redress of grievances, ie: lobbying.

It is the right of American citizens to petition the government with their grievences. It doesn't matter their concerns are about money.

The question, it seems to me, is what to do about a fundamental right that is fundamentally destroying the country. The problem is not with petitioning but the money and support politicians get for campaigns. I would call that buying favors, or corruption. Of course, the folk we elect are of such moral fiber money will not sway their votes.

And as I said, it started out as a good idea and has been corrupted into something bad.

I know full well what "lobbying" is supposed to be. But it's nothing like that anymore.

That sounds good, but which major political faction is the one NOT owned so much?

Multiple choice: Corporatist Republicans; Fundamentalist religious Republicans; Tea Party Republicans; Corporatist Democrats; Blue Dog Democrats; or Progressives.

There's a clear answer, and your opposition to them contradicts your post.

Lobbyists are specifically protected by the first amendment.

Lobbyists may be, but specific activities by lobbyists are not; others should not be.

For example, I've heard about half of all legislators (and many staffers) when they leave government service go to lobbying positions, very nicely paid.

Common sense says that fact is a big influence on their actions while in office.

When an employee announces he's going to work for a competitor, the normal policy is to not give them another day with access to company systems, but immediately cut them off and send them out the door. The government's position is, 'here, you remain in charge as a member of Congress setting policy on behalf of your future employee however many years you like'.

We should explore what can be done to limit the corrupting incentives. There should be more of a separation between government service and lobbying.

I'm not sure I see where you're going. Progressives aren't a major political faction. I do like your "my way or the highway" attitude though.

But that attitude is an attitude of failure. What does it accomplish other than piss off other people? I mean, when one takes the stance that Hugo Chavez is an amazingly wonderful person who should be revered for his greatness... how does that "my way or the highway" attitude fly?

*If* government were all-powerful and omnipotent, able to control every aspect of everyone's lives, then the pure progressive ideals might work. But reality is a whole other beast. You *have* to deal with other people in life. You have to accept that other people have free will. And that is a basic fact throughout all history, and will be never-ending through the future.

I prefer the total gridlock that results from everyone on both sides being as biased and partisan as Craig. Also it shows that you feel passionately for your beliefs. People that compromise clearly have no resolve or conviction.

If it goes on long enough and the animosity grows enough, you get to see who's passionate enough to employ violence for their cause.

Not really, it can be just resolve and conviction of a kind you can't understand.
