The more I study the bible, the more I dislike religion.

I have been on my spiritual journey for almost a year now. I have read and reread the bible, read a lot of other books on Jesus and have studied the messages that were meant to be clear in the bible.

Religion as we know it is doing a damn good job of going against everything that Jesus taught. The institution that is the modern church is so far from what a real church is supposed to be. I can honestly see why a lot of people are put off by the church.

The one message that is most clear is that we are supposed to love each other and not judge each other. But so many religious people are quick to point out others' sins while completely ignoring their own. Jesus died on the cross to remove all of our sins. He didn't say that he was removing all sin except for being gay or except for adultery. He died to free us of ALL of our sins. All he asks in return is that we love him and love our fellow man. Those seem like pretty easy requests.

The point of this thread? I guess its to explain that while there are a lot of people pretending to be spreading God's word, they are actually doing the opposite. God's word is to love unconditionally. So those of you that used the hypocrisy of some Christians as a reason to be put off....you are right. But that's not the way things are supposed to be.

Its all ridiculous if one goes by logic. Also, isn't the church rich as hell? Its just another form of power over the people.

I'm not religious, but I read the crucifixion and resulting washing away of sins differently. Jesus died to give you christians a chance to go to heaven. Sins didn't stop being sins because Jesus died, you just have a way to remove them from the scoreboard. Being gay is still a sin, and as long as a gay person continues to be gay they are sinning, although they can occasionally repent and be clean until their next transgression. The same goes for adulterers. It's a ridiculous system that makes no sense whatsoever.

I don't judge anyone concerning sin. God makes it clear that He is willing to forgive any and all sin, so long as you repent (turn away from sin), and turn to Him. We who are truly Christians aren't ones who are worthy or great of ourselves, we are the ones who were sinners. Look at the Bible and you will see the flaws and sins of the people who became His children. The Bible make it clear that it is those who were formerly thieves, extortionists, murderers, prostitutes are counted among the redeemed.

The point of this thread? it should be that nobody knows what god wants. you can only guess and/or accept what youve been told/read and then have faith in what you believe.

btw by posting this, arent you judging others?

Science bless you,
-randay

I'm not a religious person but it's pretty simple to agree with what Jesus taught. Now whether he died and was resurrected is another story...

I can't help but laugh when people think that packing into a fancy building every week and going through some motions makes them a better person when they act just as you have described any other time.

I'm better for not going to church.

Jesus or Paul? Jesus really had a very simple message and a lot of rather obscure parables. Much of the current Christian climate is shaped by Paul's epistles and their interpretation and expansion on what Christ said. When that, plus a human culture that naturally tends towards in groups, out groups and condemnation when not properly held in check, and all people in all places of all religions fall into that trap.

<--- Christian who thinks most Christian churches are missing the boat.

God is perfect. The problem is that since we are endowed with free will, we made many mistakes while trying to spread the message of God. It's our fault religion seems so faulty to some.

John Lennon said it best:

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace...

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Honestly, I think his views and beliefs are more in-line with the teachings of the bible than anything taught in church these days.

It's not a chance. Once you put your faith in God, you become a child of God, and have the Spirit of God dwelling in you. The debt of sin, past present and future, has been removed by the sacrifice of the Son of God on the cross. You become an heir of God's eternal kingdom, heaven.

Being saved doesn't mean you will never sin, it means that you have a new spirit, a regenerated spirit, that is capable of knowing God and living in righteousness. It means that you no longer desire to sin. Look at the life of Abraham, or any OT or NT saint: the pattern of righteousness is spiritual growth, not spiritual perfection. Asking for forgiveness after being saved is like asking a friend or a parent for forgiveness for an offense. Salvation itself is entering into a relationship, a walk, with God; before you become saved, you are not in that relationship, you are in enmity with God. The daily forgiveness is what keeps us walking close with God when we stray from Him.

That's pure bullshit and it's a pathetic crutch used by people who want to keep believing something that's utterly unbelievable. That free-will dodge doesn't hold up because God is supposedly hand-picking the people running his church and he's speaking through them. A perfect god would not choose pedophiles to do his work and he would not allow his message to be garbled. The all-mighty is up there, he has the ability to speak to mankind any time he wants and we can't understand because he's playing a round of the telephone game? ROFLMAO!!! Pure bullshit.

I think you skipped over or ignored important New Testament teaching.
He died for those who believe and place their faith in Him. Jesus explicitly says that not everyone will believe in Him and not everyone will enter heaven.

1. Placing your faith in Him. Which goes hand in hand with #2.
2. Obeying His commands and teachings. Making Him Lord over your life.
which includes:
- Loving God
- Loving your neighbors/fellow man
- Repenting and turning away from sin.
All the 10 commandments are still valid and fall under loving God and loving others.

I state that we'll all decompose into Nitrogen.

Mainly the bible, especially the old testament, is fear. Fear of God. He will fuck you up, the xenophobic and jealous bastard.

Try some other religions too, don't limit yourself to christianity. Read the Qu'ran. Read the Zhong Yong. Read Chuang Tzu's writings. Studying religion is a whole different animal than being religious, my worldview really changed when I incorporated Chinese philosophy into my study of indo-european religions.

Religion is big because it uses fear to control people. It's really the only way to control the masses. You can't use the military because people hate aggression.

NSFW I'm glad you got the basic of what the Bible has to say. It is very infortunate what religion does. The Bible is very clear.

wota, I have to say you are right... but you are almost saying that it takes works to get to heaven, which it does not. The Bible is very clear about it being your faith in God and asking forgiveness from your sins.

NSFW - many people use their religion as an excuse to be bigoted. You can be against the homosexual lifestyle while still loving the sinner. Being gay isnt anymore of a sin than constantly lying and not turning from those sins. The problem is that Christians are still human and instead of hating the sin, they hate the sinner. With that said, I do not think it is wrong for Christians to lobby against allowing gay marriage to be legal, because in their beliefs it is as wrong to be gay as it is to cheat or steal. Many just go about it the wrong way.

You know what I don't get about the whole sin thing?

First, here me out on this... I'm atheist-agnostic. Meaning, I don't believe there is any possibility of there being a god, however, I also am not a blatant idiot and believe there can never be any proof a god exists. However, what that really means is I am atheist, but can truthfully accept that I am/was wrong if the day ever comes that true proof comes to light. But basically, as it stands now, that necessary proof is this god guy himself coming down and saying Hi guys, I'm God. And at that point, I'll want to have a nice long conversation with the prick.

But on to the Sin thing...

First, there is this whole Holy Trinity thing, right? Where The Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit are all one? Weird, confusing, but whatever, let's roll with it.
Doesn't this kind of provide a lot of confusion about sin? First, am I getting this right.. The Father is supposed to be the body of God, Jesus is the Son of God, and the Holy Spirit is the connecting spirit between the two, which all ends up being a singular being/essence. Correct so far?

Okay. Well... doesn't the story go that God punished humanity because Adam and Eve ate the apple? And that man was then cursed to live in a life surrounded by sin, meant to endure terrible tragedies to win over the grace of this assholyness? But then Jesus is supposed to be part of the whole God equation too, correct? But if he died for man's sins so that sin could not be held against sin... hmm my head hurts.
So God had a fit of anger after being pissed off by Adam, punishes man, then places himself in a man, dies to rid man of sin, and thus removes part of the curse of man, the one of being judged by sins, so long as you worship his assholyness?

The biggest prick that ever existed. Guess it's fitting that we are supposedly created in his likeness. We are pricks because he is the supreme prick. Hmm maybe I should start believing because that definitely makes sense.
