A friend and I have both built MSI K8N neo platinum boards with 3200+ DTR AMD64 chips from Newegg. They certainly work out of the box well enough to flash the bios which you should do immediately. With the latest 1.52 Beta Bios the board actually works quite well. I'm clocking my 3200+ at 2500 (10x250) with 2 sticks of OCZ 512Meg 3700EB platinum, with water cooling. A few downs are SATA1 and SATA2 will fail to work properly with even mild overclocking, SATA3 and SATA4 work fine regardless of overclocking. Also I have some odd problems with the MB ethernet port, it will not send emails with more than 14 RETURNS in them. A 3com fast ethernet card in a PCI slot has no such problems. My friend apparently has had no problems at all. The DTR chip works well, and runs very cool at 2.25Ghz at 1.45 Vcore if you wish to cut back on heat and fan noise.

I have a few questions:

1-So the Asus K8N-E will not work with the MOBILE chips?

2-Does anyone know where the DTR chips can be ordered with the latest revision? I am ready to pull the trigger on one of these now.

3-Does anyone have the monster Thermalright XP-120 with a mobile?

Thanks,
Mack

The K8N-E will work with the 1.5v DTR CPUs but not with the 1.4v Mobile CPUs (and presumably not with the 1.2v true mobile chips either)

You can get the DTR from www.newegg.com

That Thermalright is pointless. Just get the SLK-948U, it'll cool the CPU more than adequately.

Update on the Soltek SL-K8AN2E-GR: there may be cold boot issues. I got home from work and fired it up with the DTR still in it and the fans were spinning and the CDRW kept trying to read (even though there's no disc in it) and never got video. I hit reset a few times and nada, then powered off, on again, and the same thing was happening. I had to power down, clear cmos, and then it fired right up. I'm using the latest official bios, so I'm going to go back to the original bios and see if it solves the problem when I boot up tomorrow morning.

i would like to varify that mobiles/dtrs work in the Shuttle sn85g4v2 SFF. you will need a destop CPU, or you will need to hot flash to the latest bios from shuttle.

here is just a small look at my Mobile shoe box, all on air w/ a 9800 pro

http://www.ocforums.com/showpo...9327&postcount=201

and a Vdimm mod :)

as well i am using the DFI NF3-250GB, w/ a mobile (3200+ 1m "CG" 1.4v) and a DTR(3200 1m cg 1.5v) the stock bios does have boot issues, but good here, to download a beta bios that will fix this

Gl to all

Thanks, but we already know all that. The only thing I'm not clear on is re the Shuttle box. Are you saying the latest BIOS supports mobiles while the shipping BIOS does not even if you boot with a desktop chip, set up the mobile settings, and swap it out with a mobile?

yeah you can use the stock bios, but you must either have a Desktop CPU to post and set up bios, and then either hope that you dont have to clear cmos:), or flash to the newest bios.

at shuttle.com it says that it fixes mobile support, and i am able to cleat cmos when using it. its a great combo.

After flashing back to the original bios last night with the Soltek SL-K8AN2E-GR , I didn't have the cold boot issue with the DTR 3200+ this morning. Hopefully that fixed the problem for good, but I guess it will take a few days to see if it's intermittent or not.

I also did another round of tweaking to see if the original bios made a difference in OC'ing and was able to get 10x240 1:1 stable! :) I really think this DTR has a little more in it, so I ordered the Chaintech VNF3-250 from MultiWave. I've seen mixed reports on it but hopefully it will be a success since it has higher Vcore and VDIMM than the Soltek. For $107 shipped, I got the VNF3-250, Silent Boost K8, and a tube of AS5. I wanted the DFI NF3 250GB, but it won't be shipping until October and the board alone would have cost $20~$30 more than what I paid for all three items at MultiWave. Anyway, at that price it was worth taking a chance on the Chaintech. ;)

OK, I've read a lot of this thread and it's pretty focused on OCing. That's not a problem, but I'm just looking to run one of the 1.2v chips at stock. It seems that the Asrock board works without any serious issues and doesn't require a desktop chip to flash the BIOS. It also seems that if I get that 948 heatsink that I won't have an issue with the lack of a heat spreader. Is that correct?

Of course, I can't find the Asrock board anywhere... :) And AMD is lauching the 90nm mobile chips today ... :)

Thanks,
Chris

The cold boot issue doesn't seem to be a problem anymore with the Soltek SL-K8AN2E-GR & DTR 3200+ since I flashed back to the original bios. :)

Thanks I'll update. Does it still lock down to 800mhz or does it recognize the proper speed right off the bat?

After the flash, I set everything up in bios with the 3000+ installed, then popped the DTR 3200+ in and it kept the same settings with the new chip. Tonight I'll clear cmos, load optimized defaults, and see how it reads on reboot.

Cleared cmos on the VNF3-250 and it read 800MHz (4x200) on reboot. I just went back in, reset everything and it's running like a top. I was finally able to get Prime95 stable at 10x250 on the DTR 3200+ by using 1.65 Vcore. :) I haven't been able to get the mem running stable at 1:1 yet, but hopefully will. I'm not complaining much with the mem at 2-2-2-5 at 208MHz, though. ;)

Heylo,

Ok, I'll admit, I havent read through the whole thread, it seems to have gotten quite long. Did this ever come up: I'm wanting to know what else I'll need, or what I'll need to change, to use the Venus 12 I ordered a few days ago (when I was going to use a regular A643200+ NC proc) with the 3200+ DTR from newegg? I'm going to try and get it on the DFi UT nf3 board. . .as soon as Newegg gets it back in stock. The Venus 12 should be here tomorow, so it'd be nice if I could use it instead of having to buy another hsf. If it matters, I'm going to be slapping some Arctic Silver 5 on this thing.

EDIT: Ok, so I read a bit more on the first post (you rock Bar!), so. . .would THIS would indicate a CG core revision? Its one (the only) of the pictures from a Newcastle 3200+. I know it wouldnt have the 1mb of cache, but would it still have the CG improved memory controller? Its Also 1.5v like the DTRs.

Back to reading I go. . .

Hi
I'm interested in getting a mobile chip
does anyone know if the zalman cpu water block (provided with the zalman reserator) fits with a heatspreader-less cpu in a dfi lanparty nf3-250 board?

thanks :)

Starion - in that picture, the "AX" at the end indicates that it would be a CG rev. Here's a helpful AMD chart from The Digerati: link

rpv - get the DTR 3200+ from Newegg here for $210.99 shipped.

paulspiteri & Starion - to my knowledge, the only heatsinks that are compatible with DTR and mobile chips are the ones that have springs over the screws that attach to the backplate specifically designed for the heatsink. The springs create enough tension to force contact with the heatsink and core. The SLK-948U definitely works, and the Alpha PAL8150 works if you can also find the Alpha backplate to go with it (it's not included with the heatsink).

Good luck guys!

Hello!

Thanks for the extremely informative post.
Could you please answer a few questions I have:

1) It seems to me that one of your favorite mobos to use with the Mobile Athlon is ASRock K8S8X.
I was thinking about getting one also but noticed that almost nobody carries it now. Newegg certainly
does not. Any ideas why?
2) I am interested in overclocking and want my system to be as quiet as possible. So I do not
need a powerful cooling solution. Except for SLK-948U that you recommend are there any other
HSF that can be used. I am thinking about Arctic Cooling Silencer 64 TC. Can it be modified to cool
the DTR chip and can you remove a CPU retention base on K8S8X.
3) If not K8S8X what is the next board would you recommend. I will be getting either 3000 or 3200
chip.

Thanks in advance
