The Missing Dollar

I know this is a repost (only rephrased I think, but the most recent is from '04 and before that '01)
edit: then it must have been under a different title, Aflac, or the working part of the search is broken.. and whatever, it was new to me 🙂

Three people go to dinner. They order the exact same meal. The bill is $30.00 They each pay $10.00 When the waiter brings the check to the manager, he says they paid too much. He tell the waiter to give them back 5$. So the waiter says I can't split $5 three ways so I'll give them each a dollar and keep $2 for myself. If they each paid $10 dollars then got a dollar back, this means they each paid $9. If 9x3 equals 27 and the waiter kept $2 and 27+2=29......where's the other dollar?

Definitely not from 04, I've read this before in my tenure here. I see the problem, but I can't figure out how to point it out for the life of me...

Here it is, I think. You're subtracting $3 from the total, and then trying to make that subtracted total equal the original total.

Ya.. old, and here's the reposted answer:

Each person gave $9 so $27 total was given out. The owner has $25 and the waiter has $2. Adding the amount of money 1 person has and the amount of money 3 people gave equates to a meaningless number.

Kinda each person gave out $9 so that's $27 and the owner has $25 so that's $52 dollars. Where did the extra $22 comes from since they all started with a total of $30 in the beginning??? :Q

A better question is how three identically priced meals added up to $25.00 even.

Restaurant special - buy two, get one free. No tax, no tip. 😉
