The Military Draft

Kelemvor

Lifer
I've seen a lot of bogus TV ads saying that Bush would reimplement the draft. Most people realize that this is a complete lie. Bush has even come out saying that it will never happen. and so have other military people.

Does anyone actually believe that the draft could come back any time soon (e.g. the next 4 years)? Why is this even an issue in the election since both people have said they will under NO circumstances bring back the draft.

Boggles the mind how TV commercials can influence people even when they aren't telling the truth.

Again, if you check the record, the whole draft legislation was initiated by Charles Rangel, a Democrat. For some reason though, the Dems have found cause to pawn off their fvck up on Bush.

draft wont come back... if our military ever really needed the troops, i believe we would see whatever prez ask for volunteers. and i truely believe many would volunteer.

Considering the regularity with which some members here repost that BS story, I wouldn't consider that a given.

It better not unless the Army wants a bunch of pissed off conscripts fragging their officers when they go to the sh!tter.

I don't believe it will come back. One thing the military realizes is that a volunteer military is much more effective than a drafted military. It would have to come down to all-out, worldwide war for the US to implement the draft again. So, if you want the answer to your question, watch Russia and Korea more than the middle-east.

They already have one, it's called the Back-Door draft! That's why so many reservists are getting their ass shot off for a year instead of serving a weekend a month.

the army doesn't like drafted soldiers. they don't fight very well.

you'll get crap on the news like, 'is another draft coming? one pentagon source says the army needs more troops.' the way they juxtapose those two statements makes it sound like the pentagon is considering a draft.

They signed the papers and took the money.

Now? No.

Later? Probably.

Consider that we are in a situation where we may need 100k or more troops in Iraq, plus who knows where for a decade or maybe more.

When people look at enlisting at a automatic ticket to Iraq, numbers of enlisting will decrease. At some point demand exceeds supply.

How will supply increase if the public doesn't want to go? The draft.

Not now. Later.

Gee that's funny, because our entire army is volunteer.

Drafted soldiers in VN fought very well. By the time people were in for a few months, it didn't matter if you were enlisted or conscripted. You were there and had to fight or die. I suspect that will not have changed.

Dumbass, your so called "back door draft" has been a policy for decades. Even on state active duty for National Guardsman, their ETS's, (expiration of term of service) is extended if the situation warrants. An example of state active duty is Florida Guardsmen on hurricane duty.

Involuntary extension of an ETS during deployment is nothing new.

Umm, that's why they're in the reserves .. so they can be called up when needed. It's not a draft, it's what they volunteered for.

technology is at a place now where we will never need a draft. and it will only get better. better technology replaces the need for boots on the ground.

still need some boots on the ground for general control, but not nearly as many. we're just fighting a really hard war since the enemy wears no uniform. hard to tell a terrorist from a normal iraqi ... unless he's holding a rpg

i ment if our troop lvl was every drastically too low, i believe with a little stump speach, the prez could get more volunteers.

If the stat that Kerry gave is accurate then a draft seems highly likely. Didn't he say that 10 of 11 soldiers are in Iraq, scheduled to deploy soon or just back from Iraq? I wonder if that's accurate.
