Looks like Palm is suffering a bit of post-acquisition talent drain. Mobile user interface master Matias Duarte has left Palm (PALM) and evidently hired on at the most obvious of places: Google (GOOG).
Duarte, who lead development of Palm’s webOS UI as the company’s Senior Director of Human Interface and User Experience, has jumped ship, Palm confirms. And while the company refuses to tell me where he’s going, multiple sources say it’s Google, where he’s working on the development of Android, the company’s open source platform for mobile devices.
Duarte’s departure is a significant loss for Palm and its new owner Hewlett-Packard (HPQ), which has said it plans to “double down” on webOS. His prowess with user experience and information design is well known in the industry. Before he landed at Palm in 2007, Duarte was design chief at Helio. And prior to that he led the team that created the Danger Hiptop mobile device. When Palm announced the Pre at the Consumer Electronics Show in January of 2009, it was Duarte that introduced the design of webOS.
So, as I said, a real loss for Palm as it heads to its new home at HP. And a bittersweet moment for Duarte who had great hopes for Palm’s reinvention. As he wrote in a 2009 blog post, “When I started in this field, the Palm V was the unquestioned leader in mobile devices. To this day I believe it represents one of the best consumer electronic products ever created. I always aspired to match Palm in simplicity, usability and design — so now that I’m here, I feel like a kid who’s just been handed the keys to Daddy’s convertible.”
Looks like you’ve got the keys to the Segway now, my friend.

This could mean a really slick version of Android is down the road.

This had been rumored for awhile. Apparently the guy is a bit of a control freak, and was straining some of their relations with developers who needed access to more of the core components of the OS in the SDK.

I'm not saying he didn't do wonders with developing the WebOS experience, but maybe it was time for him to move on at this point.

I'd be interested in finding out how involved he was in the actual UI design. Did he come up with a bunch of the ideas, or was he just a project manager?

Suck it Palm and HP.

Uhhh, ok. By all accounts his main work on WebOS had been completed long ago and he was now being more of a hindrance to the company than an asset.

don't get me wrong, it's a good move for Google as they really need help improving Android's core UI experience, but I don't see this as being anything all that bad for Palm or HP.

Had a Palm and it sucked ass.

Never found a single desireable HP product. Ever.

Both companies are incompetent and/or visionless. HP is like the stale bread of computing products. I'll even take a Dell *barf*.

What does that have to do with anything?

Web OS is nice but crippled by horrible hardware. Question is, is it to late for HP to revive it. The Pre is a year old for not no leaks of a replacement yet. They can't just release the same junk on other carriers and hope to gain market share. Without market share they aren't going to get developers. Without apps they won't compete.

Own both a Hero and Pre, I'll take Android. I love widgets and I can't live without a home screen.

well, the Pre Plus was a step in the right direction, the keyboard is better and the slider is sturdier. Sadly, Sprint didn't get it at the same time either... so we're stuck w/ the original.

Given it was JUST released on AT&T, I don't have any hopes of anything new till Fall at best. Especially with this merger. I'm not sure they want a repeat of releasing days before the iPhone, again.

I'm going with some kind of product announcement on the day HP completes the buyout in July.
