I've said in other threads that WI Gov. Walker's plan to eliminate collective bargaining rights from public-sector unions is a good idea. It is. What remains to be justified, however, is his exemption of police, firefighter, and state patrol unions.. and since police and firefighters are not allowed to strike in WI, the public safety argument for their exemption is out the window.
Part of Walker's budget will likely include cuts to shared revenue for WI municipalities. With between 60-65% of most WI municipalities salary/benefit costs coming from police and fire departments, including their unions in this plan would maximize cost savings and minimize the potential for police/firefighter layoffs.
I've seen a lot of praise and criticism of Walker's plan, but almost nothing about this aspect of it.
Walker is very correct in sticking to his guns about this... but until or unless he addresses this one big glaring exemption, he's not doing what the voters elected him to do.
