So looking up the the M1 Abrams Gas Turbine engine Wikipedia entry, I learned that the Honeywell AGT1500 is capable of using many types including Gasoline, Jet Fuel, Diesel, and Marine Diesel. That is so neat that this engine can do this.

Am I correct in assuming that jet fuel will give the highest performance?

Are there any gas turbine automobiles in production even if it is only used by race cars? I'm sure the fuel economy and emission issues the Chrysler Turbine had could be surmounted and improved with further R&D to use in street legal cars.

A turbine engine cannot be practically made to be as efficient (for cars) as a conventional piston engine. The most obvious reason is that gas turbines need much more fuel to idle than piston engines do.

I wonder if is possible to produce a electric turbine for cars since EV has become popular for those that can afford them.

The engine lag is also problematic for automotive use, IIRC.

Not really, both are mostly Kerosene:

No idea how it performs (comparatively) with Gasoline.

It likely would run just fine on perfume or Tequila as well.

That's pretty much true with any Gas Turbine engine.

I'm quite sure that this issue can be solved or at least greatly reduced with increased R&D and proper engineering. :rolleyes: :rolleyes: :rolleyes:

Electric turbine? A turbine is a way to extract energy out of a moving fluid. An electric turbine doesn't make any sense.

I think the idea was use a turbine to spin a generator...like the range extender for the i3.

More recently Jaguar showed a concept car which was powered by two gas turbines, the Jaguar CX75:


As mentioned above the traditional problem with gas turbines is their inefficiency at idle and the lag in delivering power but the hybrid battery setup counters both as the turbine can recharge the batteries when not needed to drive the wheels and the battery power can counter the lag.

I was watching a video recently of the big Union Pacific turbine locomotives and had wondered if they were any more feasible now with other modern technological improvements but I guess the answer in both cars and locomotives is that conventional piston engines are more than good enough.
