Breathe, breathe in the air
Don't be afraid to care
Leave but don't leave me
Look around and choose your own ground
For long you live and high you fly
And smiles you'll give and tears you'll cry
And all you touch and all you see
Is all your live will ever be

Run Rabbit run!
dig that hole, forget the sun,
and when at last the work is done
don't sit down it's time to start another one
for long you live and high you fly
but only if you ride the tide
and balanced on the biggest wave
you race towards an early grave

So, so you think you can tell Heaven from Hell,
blue skies from pain.
Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?
And did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage?
How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have you found? The same old fears.
Wish you were here.

I want to tell you a story
'bout a little man
if I can
A gnome named Grimble Gromble
and little gnomes
stay in their homes

I just listened to both versions I have over again (Pulse and DSOTM), and in both of them he says "the lunatic is on the grass." I would have theorized that they changed it for the live version, but Pulse is a live recording, so maybe they have different versions that they sing at different times. Or maybe it depends on who's singing. IIRC, doesn't Dave Gilmour sing on the Pulse version? Maybe he sings the singular form, and Roger sings the plural? I dunno, what's the point of discussing this anyway?

It was just before dawn
one miserable morning in black '44
When the forward commander
was told to sit tight
when he asked that his men be withdrawn
and the generals gave thanks
as the other ranks
held back the enemy tanks
for awhile
and the Anzio bridgehead
was held for the price
of a few hundred ordinary lives.

Kind old King George sent Mother a note
when he heard that Father was gone
It was, I recall, in the form of a scroll
with gold leaf adorned
and I found it one day
in a drawer of old photographs hidden away
and my eyes still grow damp to remember
his majesty signed
with his own rubber stamp.

It was dark all around
and there was frost in the ground
when the Tigers broke free
and no one survived
from the Royal Fusseliers
Company C
They were all left behind
most of them dead
the rest of them dying
and that's how the High Command
took my Daddy
from me.

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an off - hand way
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way
Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain
