The Linux based laptop is finally here. Walmart.com has the Balance 14.1" Notebook Computer with CD-ROM Drive for only $498. Shipping is $7.10.

The system runs on Linux which shaves about $US100 off the OEM cost and is loaded with "Microsoft Office file-compatible" software, which saves it even more.

Features:

VIA C3 processor 1.0 GHz
14.1" LCD panel
Lindows/Linspire version 4.5
128 MB memory
30 GB hard drive
CD-ROM drive
4 cell battery
4 USB 2.0 ports
FREE 3-month CNR Service for 1-click install of over 1,900 software titles and automatic updates
Complete Microsoft Office file-compatible office software suite to create and share Word (.doc), Excel (.xls) and PowerPoint (.ppt) documents

To bad it has such a crappy cpu in it. That cpu doesn't even beat a 600mhz Duron in most things. I guess for Internet and word processing it is ok. But for anything else it will be pretty much a dogg.

Like I said in the original thread, it makes no sense to buy this when for $548 from walmart.com you can get an AMD XP 1.1 GHz "1600+" version with Windows XP home.

If you want to add penguins to it later, Walmart won't stop you.

Exactly. That VIA chip is absolutely horrible.

And both BB and CUSA have decent $600AR 15.4" widescreen laptops on sale this week (eMachines M5405 and Toshiba M35X-S149, respectively). You can always add OpenOffice yourself. 🙂
