Wouldn't it be much easier to help people out on here using Remote Desktop or VNC, something like that?
I've been thinking this since seeing threads where it's so difficult to diagnose someone's problem without actually seeing it, and this would be a much easier way of doing things.

Obviously, there's going to be some worry about letting someone loose on your system, but if they're a long-standing and trusted member, then it shouldn't be a problem?

Thoughts?

Well yeah, I know that, but no-one seems to use it on here. I know I wouldn't mind helping people out this way, but I suppose there'd have to be some form of guarantee to the end-user that I wouldn't delete their Japanese horse pr0n or something.

That's a good point, but maybe a guide could be written to take care of that...?

It takes about 5 mins tops to guide them to install vnc (one time only) and then next time you tell them, right click on the vnc icon in system tray, add new client, and then type this ip. Done.

As long as it's from a trusted source, then yeah. A lot of businesses do it that way actually. it's not a new idea.

However, it does promote out-sourcing :/

Let's assume I change my nick to something a little more Tech-friendly (which I was thinking of doing anyway because of the amount of n00bs that use it as a leverage point in an argument), and write a few guides?

NEVER EVER assume even if you write a guide....

1) People will read it
2) If read, people will understand it
3) if Understand it, actually preform it correctly....

Never overestimate the level of knowledge or understanding in a client.

I think phone support is easier than supporting people on a webforum (I've done phone support, 4 hour calls suck).

I think phone support is easier than supporting people on a webforum (I've done phone support, 4 hour calls suck).

I agree. I've actually never offically done webforum support....

however....never done 4 hour calls either.

Never had to deal with a problem that big.

See that's the thing, I wouldn't be able to do phone support as I'm in the UK, and also in a different time zone. That might work out well, as I'd be around in the evening when people are having problems during the day.
Ideally, I'd like to see this expanded into having someone specialise in spyware, someone in OS problems, someone on Internet issues...a team, if you will.
