In a forum filled with atrocious grammar and spelling, it sure is ironic that so many would expect a man to never make a mistake when speaking in public.

Not to mention the fact that some posters seem to have a comprehension problem. There is an entire forum created for crap like this yet they insist on leaving these occasional droppings in OT. Why not post this in P&N where it belongs?

The intention of this thread seems to be to point out something that some people will find funny. That, to me, means "Off-topic", so I see no problem with this thread being posted here. When people with their panties in a bunch feel to need to jump in every thread to back up the target of the joke, then they're the ones that are better served replying to threads in P&N, and leave the jokes alone.

the smoking gun clip puts it a little more in context (giving the lead-in and giving at least a sentence more to the end)
im impressed that rummy doesnt blink an eye.
but perhaps he isnt listening.

someone mentioned this forum is full of typos and errors on the part of the posters. but i doubt the vast majority of us would not be able to get through a single sentence without brain-damaged slurring and drug-addled confusion of simple phrases. if bush were allowed to send out memos to the nation, im sure there would be a ton more of material to give him crap about.
everyone should be happy with his simple blunders: those against him get a cheap laugh and those for him can rest assured the more pressing issues will be placed aside for another few hours.

The Smoking Gun link does put it in context. To properly secure something you must first think of every way to attack it.

It's only a gaff to people who take it out of context and purposely pass it off as something it isn't.

...Exactly as I said. I hate the media. Both sides do the same thing.

IS THIS GUY READING OFF OF CARDS, HOW CAN HE BE SCREWING THIS UP?

He isn't. As has been pointed out, when put in context he is stating the obvious: to properly secure something, you must think of every way possible to attack it.

Only some people have taken it out of context and are running with it.

How very Micheal Moore-ish of them.

LMFAO....riiiiiiight.

He didn't make a mistake...the poor guy was really making a profound statement that most of us simpletons couldn't see. Yep..SURE.

Poor Bush...always picked on.

*cries*

never make a mistake? make a mistake once or twice...ok we'll let that slip. but this guy keeps on coming back with more and more. after a while, you start questioning his intelligence.

and btw...his grammar wasnt wrong, neither was his spelling.

It wasn't a mistake. He was reading a speech from cue cards.

When taken in context, it is quite obvious what he meant. Granted, he should have ran it by a few people who would have told him how easily it could be taken out of context and used against him, but to say it's a "gaff" or that it means anything other than what I pointed out above is simply dishonest or stupid.

The only people running with this are partisan people with axes to grind.

1. Someone asked if Kerry would use this in an ad.. no way! Because it's already received enough air time, plus it was taken out of context.
2. You'd think that Bush's speech writers would eventually realize that every sentence can be taken out of context and aired alone...

Nonetheless, this was pretty amusing 🙂 And for the P&N Nazi's, I suppose they want "hokay, so this is the earth" moved to P&N too because it's about nuclear proliferation?

Right. I love the logic. Anyone who speaks negatively about Bush is simply being a partisan Bush basher. However, those that will defend what was obviously yet another of the myriad of "Bushisms" are just more enlightened and seeing the deeper meaning.

If Kerry or anyone else for that matter made a similar blunder, it would be equally funny to me.

The whole point is that it isn't a blunder, and it's plainly obvious that it isn't. It just requires a little more logical thought than the typical action movie dialog.

You can speak negatively all you like. But to take quotes out of context and make them appear to mean somthing they do not, or try to pass them off as a "gaff" simply makes you look like a crazed fanatic who has trouble with honesty.

I understand you have an agenda, but realize that the ends do not justify the means. When you twist the facts and resort to dishonesty, you do more harm to yourself than anyone else.

The fact is, it is not a blunder. He is pointing out the fact that to protect the country, they are thinking up every way it can be attacked.

The only blunder here is he used wording that could be taken out of context by dishonest people and used against him.

Riiight. Gotcha. Not only am I a partisan Bush basher, I've also got an AGENDA!!

Ok, I guess I am just making this out to be nothing when it's clear he was being an ultra cunning linguist and making some deeper meaning...

I'll have to apologize for the AP story on it...it seems they like the copy of "My Agenda" I faxed to them...

A new 'Bushism': We're gonna get us

The Associated Press
Updated: 2:29 p.m. ET Aug. 5, 2004

WASHINGTON - President Bush offered up a new entry for his catalog of ?Bushisms? on Thursday, declaring that his administration will ?never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people.?

Bush misspoke as he delivered a speech at the signing ceremony for a $417 billion defense spending bill.

?Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we,? Bush said. ?They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we.?

[...]

White House spokesman Scott McClellan said Bush?s misstatement ?just shows even the most straightforward and plain-spoken people misspeak.?

Yep...no misstatement there. CLEARLY Mr. McClellan was referring to something that you guys said didn't happen...weird.

Oh, and yes, I did fax a copy of "My Agenda" to the White House as well. I apologize for any effect that "My Agenda" will have on my fellow Americans.

😱

defend it all you want, the speech writer that came up with those lines should be fired.

communication is all ABOUT perception. that should be obvious. it doesn't really matter what you INTENDED to say if it isn't PERCEIVED that way by the marjority of people.

With that, I will agree. It was too easily taken out of context and twisted to mean something it did not.

But that does not justify it's use as propaganda. Again, the ends do not justify the means.

Insane3D,

I see you are now using the out of context quote for your sig. I guess for you, dishonest means are justified so long as you agree with the ends, eh?

If dishonesty is justified for you, realize that it is now justified for those who oppose your viewpoint. I will remind you of this next time you accuse someone of being dishonest or twisting the facts.

I suppose you're right... the first 50 million times Bush screwed up... 😀

So? He gets his words crossed when speaking off the cuff. Big deal. Many intelligent people do this and are not great public speakers on the fly.

And then there are very charismatic speakers who are dumber than a box of rocks, or just plain evil.

Urban Dictionary definition for "off the cuff"
What part of that speech was spontaneous or unrehearsed? He's reading directly from the notecards. Seems pretty prepared to me.
