That's cool, because he thought he was a big dog and loved hanging with them. More than once at the end of a long day with a new big friend, he crawl up to lay by his feet.

Oh yes, that's a Jack Russel trait alright: "body size? Huh? You sure I'm smaller than I think I am? I don't believe you!"

He looked like a good heart, and we should all be so blessed to have a loving four-legged best friend right by our side through thick and thin. And such a dog can do no better than having a friend like you, who surely gave him strength to carry on and gave him something to look forward to every time you were separated.

14 years is a good long life for most dogs. I hope you enjoyed every last one. It certainly looks like he sure did by those photos.

Such love, devotion, and energy - it sucks they can't live as long as we do, but they sure give you everything they've got while they're here!

Still have those memories, but damn last night and this morning have been hard.
See, we made the mistake of letting that little lonely pup up on the corner of the bed. He cried and pined away in the crate for the first two nights, then he just jumped up there and curled up one night as we got ready for bed. he must have slept on somebody's bed that first year. He asked us in his way "can I please stay?" Dozer the rottie took one look at the situation, and laid down in his usual place on the floor with a big sigh.
he has been down by my feet or legs for 13 years almost to the day. I missed that little #!%%^^ even more, my legs looked for him.

I'm sorry I'm late to the thread... just saw your email and PM. I am so sorry for the departure of your friend. Rocky was a total love. I just remember him darting into our house when you let him out of the car and perching on the top of the sofa to look out the window.

May canine joy enter your life again as soon as you are ready.

I love my dogs to the point that I'm already dreading the day that they are gone. They are members of your family and it's so hard to see them go.

UPDATE:

We thought we could wait. I broke down and started looking at Craigslist Thursday night.

We found a couple of dogs that needed a home together. They had been together their whole lives.

The first home burned down, and those folks had no way to keep them. Within hours at a shelter, their new dad came in after saying goodbye to his 16 year old Jack. He was looking for two. He had a Jack Russell with him his whole life of long haul trucking.

His niece works as a vet tech at a hospital. He wisely put her in charge of the dogs in his will. 2 1/2 years later he passes away from a heart attack.

Now she already has two dogs and two cats and two horses, and needs to find these two a good home.

Here they are at their first night at my niece's home.

Russer is a 5 year old male Jack.

Katie looks to be a terrier-chihuahua mix, 3 year old.

So now the crappy news. It seems they are killing Mary with the different dander. She has pet allergies, cat much worse than dog. She must have been used to Rocky and I think these two are different. We will wait and see but they may have to find a new home. She is taking it much worse than I, but I told her we can just foster adopt in the pet rescue network till we find the dog that she can tolerate well.

The niece said she would take them back no questions asked. Her mom, uncles and cousins really want these two to have a good home. They are a link back to uncle.

If it comes to that we will do anything to find these two a good home. They are a handful but also a kick in the butt. They roughhouse together, sleep on each other, clean the ears, all those pack things.

He is intense in that JRT way, needing tons of ball throwing and play. She just chases him when he chases the ball. He absolutely watches TV! He sees animals and gets focused, and if a dog barks he runs over and talks to the TV, looks behind it, etc. Pretty much any animal will do, he really sees them.

She is the softest thing you have ever touched. She just wants to lay next to you or on you when she is not playing with Russer. They have been around cats, and are very good with dogs and children.

This really blows but it is nothing like losing a buddy of 13 years. We just need to help them find a good home.

Sorry to hear you lost an obviously well loved member of the family OP. Been through it a couple of times myself and no matter how much I tell myself it is for the best it still hurts like a bitch.

Sorry for your loss I had to put my springer spaniel down in October 2012. I still miss him. He was an awesome dog.
