u should be able to play practically all dx8 games and most dx9 games at lower settings and resolution.

I would like to point-out that my ATI Rage128 PRO 4x AGP with 32MB of dedicated video RAM scores around 1300 3DMarks in a desktop system coupled with an Athlon XP2000+ and 512MB of DDR system RAM; 1400 if I overclock the core and mem as high as it will go without crashing. 1500+ for a notebook is pretty good, though obviously not a gamer's choice (and the article does make clear the IBM X31 is not intended to be a gaming notebook).

Given the intended business market of the X31, the ATI Mobility Radeon does it plenty of favors:

The X31's standalone ATI Mobility Radeon graphics controller, with just 16MB of its own memory, produced bright, saturated colors and good focus on a 1,024x768 screen...

Mission accomplished.
