Mobile Graphics Comparison

Reviews and comparisons for laptop graphics chips are often hard to find, so I've compiled a bunch of reviews comparing the various laptop video cards. Enjoy!

Please post additional links, etc.

HardOCP- NVIDIA MXM Graphic Module
This is basically a PCI-EXPRESS slot (NVIDIA proprietary) for your notebook. ATI should reveal their specification for an upgradable video slot soon.

Heh I remember when the Geforce2 go used to be the absolute best in 2001.
Now they're second worst.
Oh how times change... :)

Thanks, I'll try to keep this updated as new GPUs come out.

btw, do I need to e-mail the mods to get this stickied?

Best bet is to send a Private Message (PM) to Anandtech Moderator.

Nice links, thanks! :)

i would like to see (but have no idea where they fall) these mobile cards placed side by side standard agp cards. the naming conventions confuse me, and imagine quite a few. it would be interesting to see if say a mobile radeon 9000 is better than a desktop radeon 9100 or whatever.

thanks

Cool, thanks!

Interestingly, in the shootout at rojakpot.com, it shows that the Mobility Radeon (no numbers, just the original Radeon, like in the X31 as someone asked) scores LOWER than the Intel integrated i855GM!

I know my original thought was that ANY dedicated GPU chipset would be better than the integrated, but it looks like (from this review, at least) the Mobility Radeon is pretty useless...

Both the IBM X31 and the Sony VAIO Z1 use this old Mobility Radeon chipset...I almost bought the Z1 because I thought it would be a decent gaming machine...

This has gotten me questioning my assumptions about the integrated video. If anyone else has more reviews/benchmarks on the Intel integrated video, please post!

Thanks!

I was running an IBM R31 with intel graphics for about the last 2 years; I don't have any sort of benchmarks (other than that one time I visited the Alienware site and it told me all of their (desktop) models would outperform my laptop by about 1000%...). Next year we are getting Dell D600's with Radeon 9000 graphics. :)

It worked fine, although my expectations were never particularly high. The problem is, it won't even start up anything that requires a Geforce2 or better (It's not a question of framerates; it's a question of you try and run it and it pops up a dialog box saying your hardware doesn't support some feature it needs and then exits). I imagine the systems running the original radeon are similar.

If you want to be able to run some older games, like CounterStrike, or some less graphically intense games like WarCraft III, any card will do.

some of the older HP and Compaq laptops have mobility radeons that use shared memory
www.hpshopping.com
take a look at the HP ze5000 and ze4000 series
also the Compaq 2500 and 2100 series
thats what i was going off of but there may be other companies that offer the mobility radeon with dedicated mem

eMachines M6805 (Mobility Radeon 9600, 64MB vRAM)

No hard numbers here, but I installed UT2004 and played it. I bumped the video details down to normal and played at 800X600. I was totally immersed in the game, so the video performance was at least good enough in that regard. When one is playing a frenetically paced game, as long as the FPS is high, does lower detail matter? I enjoyed UT2004 as much as I did on my 'performance' rig.

Sound quality of the laptop speakers, however, was crap.

On a desktop, a GF4 MX420 is almost exactly the same as a GF2 MX400. Is it actually faster than a 7500 and a GF2 Go on a laptop?

Hey, the benchmark uses a wimpy 32 meg 5200 go. The 9000 is 64 meg. Not really fair. According to Dell, and most people on the Dell forums, the 64 meg 5200 is faster than the 64 meg 9000. Anybody have a 9000 mobile that they want to benchmark against me? I have the 32 meg 5200 but the 64 meg card is on the way. This all on a p4 2.66 btw....

Anyone know of a good comparison of the ATi Mobility 9600 with the FireGL2? I know theyre the same chipset, just optimized for different applications, but it would be nice to see a side-by-side.....especially someone who installed the Catalyst (or Omega?) drivers on their FireGL2
