The Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool

A few days ago I found the (beta) free AVP tool from Kaspersky. There are no real-time protection modules, auto scans, or auto update features. However the definitions are updated several times each day and a new 'build' is placed on their FTP. By default it will install to the desktop and run as a service so that each time you reboot it will launch the program. While this is semi-annoying you can simply disable the service. To uninstall or update to a new build simply click the 'Complete Antivirus Protection' link in the bottom right corner of the program.

The Kaspersky Online Scanner will only detect malware, so this tool is a real blessing for those wanting a second opinion, or a second on-demand scanner, with superior detection and removal capabilities. Be sure to download the latest version each time you need it.

How well does this detect and clean?

Let's face it no one real time AV application is going to catch it all, and I'd like to add in an on demand scanner such as this, or Dr. Web CureIt: http://freedrweb.com/

Do any of the on demand scanners stand out for detection and cleaning?

THANKS

If it's just like big brother then I know...

Anyhow how does it compare to Dr. Web CureIt Free?

One thing that has me nervous about Kaspersky is the chkdsk issues people are talking about, then iSwift so I've been skeptical to install any Kaspersky apps for now.

The CHKDSK issue catches a lot of flack since iSwift adds object id's to your files. In the grand scheme of things it's trivial because you should rarely run chkdsk anyhow, and all it does is delay stage 2. You would think intelligent people ought to be able to pull themselves away from the pc long enough for chkdsk to complete. ;) If you can look past this issue then you've got one of the best AV/Suite's on the market. Millions of people, including myself, have used Kaspersky for several years without a hitch. The detection rate is also superior to DrWeb.

AFAIK AVPTool doesn't generate iSwift & iChecker databases.

I searched the Kaspersky forums and found no objections. You may want to consider contacting Kaspersky support for further confirmation.

Thanks, by the way what's with the daily updates on this thing? This thing a Beta?

As a Unix geek I don't mind the daily updates if I was in Unix, but in Windows, I'm not worried about the system, just the PAIN of constantly looking to download another update every day... :(

By the way, is there a website page for this thing, or only the FTP download?

Yes, as stated in the OP it is beta. However it's no different than Dr.Web's CureIt since it is also updated multiple times each day.

How do I update Dr.Web CureIt!?

This utility can quickly clean an infected system, but it is not a permanent tool to cure your computer in case of infection. Its distribution on our web-site is always armed with the hottest add-ons to the Dr.Web virus database, but it does not include the Dr.Web Automatic Updating utility. Dr.Web CureIt! stays actual until the next release of the add-on. To scan your computer with the most up-to-date Dr.Web virus databases next time you should download new Dr.Web CureIt! package.

What Dr.Web's CureIt version is updated constantly too? I thought it was a stable not beta?

I downloaded for a friend 3-4 days ago, and it's the same version. Versions aren't changing as rapidly as Kaspersky.

By the way Kaspersky might be Beta, but it's an intense beta with nightly builds, after all most betas don't go through nightly changes in software, more like monthly...

Nightly builds are more likely builds in a development Alpha, or PreAlpha in a CVS repository being developed on, I'm a Unix/Linux geek... ;)

Personally I'm not into messing with something in Windows with nightly builds unless I was a developer, or really geeked on getting it, and I'm not, but in Unix/Linux I'd mess with it.
