For some reason I read crowbars as "crossbow", that they fired a arrow at him using a crossbow, and it bounced off his arms. That seems far more impressive than this crowbar.

lol.. same... but then i thought "who the f carries crossbows.".... then i reread the title 😱

But the attacker caught up with John Jr. at the other side of the mall parking lot, jumping out of a silver two-door sedan with three other teens

wtf?

hmm thats some martial arts he is in. if he is able to block a crowbar with his arm.

I'm sure if you stuck your arms up like a boxer, and someone hit them with a crowbar, they would shatter regardless of who you are. But that's not the idea in most Asian martial arts. The idea is to deflect the energy of a strike away from you, or cushion it, or simply attack the arm performing it before it reaches you, not to directly pit the strength of your arms against your opponent's.

thats just it. he is a brown belt. in AMERICAN karate.

I just think something stinks in the story.

There really isn't any such thing as 'America Karate' - sure, there is a school by that name, but that's because the school is based in the USA not because the system was developed there. It was developed mostly in Japan.

Facing a straight right to the face, a western boxer will lower his head and place his arms in front of his face, meaning a stronger fighter (or a weapon) will be able to penetrate that block. An Asian style boxer will push the arm past the side of his face with a forearm or open hand, allowing the significant forward force of the strike to slide past it's target, and directly countering only the much weaker sideways forces. A 10 year old child could block Lennox Lewis with that technique.

he's been training for 12 years and he's only a brown belt?

First of all, the belt ratings for children and adults are different. If he's 17, he's probably only started the adult class at 15 or 16. And to pass for a black belt, his father can't just grant him the belt, he has to be approved by a panel of official judges (assuming the school is legitimate).

The only way to work against range extenders like crowbars and pool cues is to get inside, fast.
Stay out at the hammer end and it's all bad.
I bet he got inside and most if not all of that blocking was indeed on opponent's wrists. That hurts opponent's arm like hell😀
