The Ironing! The Ironing!

Member of the family most responsible for the Opioid Crisis poised to make even more money selling a "cure" for opiold addiction! 😕

A member of the family that owns Purdue Pharma — which is being sued by more than 1,000 jurisdictions for its alleged role in seeding the opioid crisis with its pain medication OxyContin — has been awarded a patentfor a treatment for opioid use disorder.

Dr. Richard Sackler is listed as one of six inventors on the patent, which was issued in January and was first reported Friday by the Financial Times. Critics told the FT that they were disturbed that the patent could enable Sackler to benefit financially from the addiction crisis that his family’s company is accused of fueling.

Excuse me while I quietly retire to a corner and cry. 🙁

Not sure if irony or utterly unconscionable.

But here's the thing: the Sacklers have spent nothing short of a small fortune themselves fighting and squashing the last decade+ of data showing that oxycontin and such opioids are addictive. The promise of these drugs, from the beginning, was that they were not addictive; a point that Purdue trained their drug mules...er sales reps to drive into the skulls of physicians all over the country, so much so that this thought persisted despite the perpetual creep (which eventually became a flood) of case studies, over decades, that this was, in fact, completely untrue. Obviously some of this is on the doctors that just decide not to read the literature and keep up to date like they are supposed to, but of course Purdue knew all of this data (much of it was their own), and like Big Tobacco, engaged in very expensive campaigns to sell the opposite argument. All of this happened.

It's just weird that, after so long and spending so much money fighting endless lawsuits that largely hinged on the addictiveness of their drug, here they are, patenting a a drug to treat opioid "use disorder."

lol @ "use disorder." See! It's not an addiction! It's a use disorder! What a bunch of fucking assholes.

Use disorder is the language used in DSM 5. That quibble is not with Purdue. If a new treatment that's effective for opioid addiction comes out, as a doctor who treats addiction, I'll be glad for it regardless of manufacturer.

This is nothing new.

There is a long history of Pharma inventing diseases they have found a cure for. Look at Shamans, witch doctors, priests and any other snake oil salesmen.

Man, do you have a bad case of Bynimbrolemia. Seek medical attention of the hallucinations don't subside with 24 hours.

Absurd... Now what is the odds that the cure be more expensive than the actual addiction? Get that shit to china and reverse engineer it.. bring back truckloads
