Yes, the iPod is a fully functional FW external HDD.

how reliable are the hard drives inside these things? I mean, if its in your pocket, its gonna get jostled around a lot, which isnt an issue for the solid state players. Im leaning more towards solid state, but most of them have a crappy 128 MB MB of memory and expandable to some bullsh!t size like 196 with 64 MB mmc or sm cards.

what I want in a perfect player is, about 128 MB onboard, with the option of 128MB+ sm and/or cf card slots. are there any that fit that description these days?

It really is though. The ease of use, the speed of transfer, the small size, the features it's got. Yeah, it's overpriced ... but honestly that's it's only downside (well, IMO of course). Until you can actually get your hands on one and use it for a while, you just don't know how great it is. I must have read a hundred reviews and looked at a thousand pictures, but until you actually use one you don't understand how spot on those reviews are.

I have one...

owned

i have one also i luv it i still think its too big though i want one the size of a motorola v60 w/o the antenna and ill be happy

i have a 10GB PC model

i dont like the way it works with MMJB though i do like music match i just think the ipod connect interface could be made a lot better

Use Ephpod - it's free and much cleaner and easier to use than MMJB. You can actually just uninstall MMJB.

Took me some added steps to get Ephpod to work. I had to uninstall MusicMatch, then go to in my Device Drives and remove the iPod, then plug it back in so Windows would see it as a hard-drive instead of MusicMatch screwing with the settings...

because you assumed that he didnt have an ipod and if he did he would think it was the greatest thing in the world but he doesnt

what would be the next step down as far as mp3 players are concerned?

I have to buy one for someone but I wouldn't like to spend quite this much but may end up doing it anyways.

I invested quite a bit of time into researching the different choices of MP3 jukeboxes out there and I JUST purchased a Nomad Zen. There is also a company called Archos that makes a nice cheap player WITH video but after all the researching I chose the Zen. It looks great, people like it a lot and its quite a bit cheaper than the iPod

Does the Zen feel alot heavier/bigger than the iPod? I really do love the size and weight of the iPod.

I love my iPod. I have tried many MP3 players and the iPod is, by far, my favorite.

I have the 10GB and I would recommend it to EVERYONE.

just ordered the 20Gb iPod for myself and the apple keyboard :D after MUCH THOUGHT.

My MD with real time transfers wasn't cutting it even though the speed of transfer was the ONLY thing I didn't like about it :(. Everything else beats the iPod for me. Size, battery length and remote.

Didn't want to go NetMD with the hassle of converting my mp3's to ATRAC before transfering to my NetMD. Also buggy software and speed wasn't that great either.

At least it was free shipping from apple UK and I save myself some money :D

Hoping to get it asap!

I've got the 20 gig Nomad 3. Got it for $150 cheaper than the same size iPod. It can now be had for even $100 less than that.

Yes the form factor and interface might be superior on the iPod. But given how I use mine (in car, at desk at work, on airplanes), the form factor is a non-issue. And the interface is more than sufficient for me as well. So I went with the cheaper option.

according to www.macosrumors.com
According to sources outside Apple who are familiar with iPod hardware and software development, Apple already has plans for numerous iPod updates and variations, up to and including video playback capability with a color screen that will cover almost the entire front face of the iPod. However, the more immediate revision will be relatively modest -- storage capacities of up to 60GB, a new enclosure with more customization options, an entry-level price tag of $199 for the 5GB model, and at least one of the following: AAC/AC3 audio playback support, direct audio recording support with a built-in microphone, and greatly increased integration with Apple's iLife/iApps software suite for smooth workflow on any number of host computers when you connect your iPod.

The update is not affixed to any firm schedule now; Apple is waiting for the strong stock of existing iPods to clear out of the distribution channel before announcing new models. Right now Apple has January 25th tagged as a possible release date, but that is rapidly becoming less likely according to new recon received by Rumors today. We now think it will come either in early February, or along with the 15-inch Powerbook/Xserve update we described above.
but I have no idea what their track record is in predicting Apple's moves.
