The internet is dead in canada... 25gb cap for everybody

Well, we've decided if our cap os dropped from 125gb to 25gb we'll be cancelling our services with Rogers, 25gb would last about 6 days before we go over.

Just checked my service, we have Rogers Express so cap is only 60Gb, penalty is $2 per additional 1 Gb. Blown it a few times when i bought stuff over steam, otherwise not a problem.

But if they drop the cap even 1 Gb, I'll be looking for a new ISP.

and go where exactly? all ISP's will be capped..Teksavvy,MNSI, Bell, Rogers, Shaw etc etc etc
 
Federal Industry Minister Tony Clement issued a statement on UBB literally one minute ago. It's more of a non-statement than a statement, but at least it's a response.

Today, the Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Industry, issued the following statement regarding usage-based billing:

“On Tuesday, January 25, 2011, the CRTC announced its decision to allow wholesale and retail internet service providers to charge customers for exceeding the monthly usage of data transfer permitted with their broadband Internet package. This will mean, for the first time, that many smaller and regional internet service providers will be required to move to a system of usage-based billing for their customers.

I am aware that an appeal has been initiated by a market participant. As Canada’s Industry Minister, it is my job to help encourage an innovative and competitive marketplace, and to ensure Canadian consumers have real choices in the services they purchase. I can assure that, as with any ruling, this decision will be studied carefully to ensure that competition, innovation and consumers were all fairly considered.

The Harper Government is committed to encouraging choice and competition in wireless and internet markets. Increased choice results in more competition, which means lower prices and better quality services for Canadians. We have always been clear on our policies in this regard and will continue on this path.

Our Conservative Government is focussed on the economy and creating a positive environment for job creators and business to flourish. Canadians can count on us to do what is in the best interest of consumers.”

Guess I'll be getting a 56k modem to spite them...

I read the small companies get capped, the ones that 'borrow' bandwidth from the big companies (i.e. Bell, Rogers and Shaw).

Read a comment earlier regarding this article somewhere else. Rogers, Bell et al may be doing this to limit TV streaming so you won't dump your cable TV. Kind of works...

Might be forced to work from home because of the impending snow storm, good thing it's a new month and i'm not throttled down to 128kb's , wouldn't be able to work...
 
yllus, does that statement by Clement mean that the "appeal" will delay the implementation of usase-based billing? kinda hard to read between the lines and it's been well over a decade since i studied communications laws in Canada... lol

1: Address the issue with a promise to make sure it's "fair for all".
2: Hookers and blow for six months.
3: Announce that he has seen nothing unfair in the ruling and nothing will be changed.
4: ??
5: Profit!

lmao, this is pretty much what i assumed 😀
 
maybe i will just ditch my cable bill completely and be a strictly-streaming guy. if i'm going to be spending money on internet, i might as well get everything i need from it. never any decent HD streaming for the sports i watch though 🙁

see, CRTC?! this isn't encouraging competition... it's forcing me to choose one type of media over the other... boo urns 😛
 
I'm going to have to be careful. My cap is 100GB and looking at my usage I average just about that. This month was an exception and I used 200GB. I did take a quick look at switching ISPs but as others mention it's probably only a mater of time before they all go UBB. That and there are no other ISPs available to me here that offer the speed that I get now (15mbps) down.

We have also thought of doing what meltdown75 mentioned above and cutting some or all of our cable service but in the end I don't think we will do that.

Go look at some of the more popular games' recommended hard drive space and you'll change your tune. Here are a few:

Fallout - New Vegas - Hard Disk Space: 10GB free space
Dead Space 2 - Hard Disk Space: 10GB free space
Dead Space - Hard Disk Space: 7.5GB free space
Batman: Arkham Asylum GOTY - Hard Drive: 8GB free space

At this rate they can afford 1 game per month, tops.

So make adjustments? You know in the old days, you could actually drive down to a "store" and purchase "DVDs" with games on them.

I am not defending a 25-60GB cap, that is bullshit and I would cancel. I am talking about the people going over the 250GB soft caps that US providers use.

and why the hell would I agree to go back to the old days, for the same price no less, simply because my ISP wants more money? we aren't talking about 250 GB caps which are entirely reasonable at this time.

You dont have to agree to do anything. Nobody is forcing you to give your money to them.

In a healthy market, a new provider would come along, give people a higher cap, charge them a bit more than the rest, and make a fortune.

Sadly utilities markets are never fair 🙁

There is no new providers. Bell and Rogers owns like 90% of the line. They are trying to kill off the small guys that lease from them and make them look bad.

Get Comcast Business Class. It might cost more, but they don't oversell it (ie our 50 mbit is 50 mbit) and they don't give a fuck how much bandwith you use.

Our house does close to 30 gigs per day of legal downloading and we've never ever ever had a complaint or even a call from them.
