For the longest time I thought they were the same. Basically comes down to Biel vs Johansson and Jackman vs Norton. Norton wins..the other is a really tough toss up. Which should I watch tonight? Or should I just dumb it down and watch Employee of the month?

The illusionist is way better. The story is relatively different I thought and the Prestige got ridiculous at the end

And the Illusionist doesn't? I liked the Prestige better myself. The motivation was more believable and the protagonist/antagonist aren't as clear cut.

I haven't seen the Illusionist yet, but the Prestige was pretty good.

And hey, Hugh Jackman is Wolverine...

I thought the motivation in the illusionist was believable enough and i thought the twist was better. personally i saw the twist in the presige pretty early on. and seriously, (SPOILER) cloning? gimme a break

I usually let a movie have an unbelievable plot element if everything else is good. Take Stranger than Fiction, Click, The Time Machine, etc. Not the best movies but enjoyable with ridiculous plot elements. I saw the other major twist early on but not the spoiler you mentioned, maybe that is why I liked it more

I think that I was ok w/ STF, CLick, Time Machien because the movie starts off as not totally grounded in reality. But Prestige begins as a realistic movie but decides to throw in some scifi at the end. I usually really hate this kind of deus ex machina element

Yeah it was a little out there, I thought. Even weirder was that they didn't put an emphasis on it. You're like, holy crap! And then they just keep doing magic tricks to impress audiences. Seemed a little weak to me. But I liked it.

Prestige was a better movie for me, though don't let that stop you from the Illusionist because that was a good time as well.

True.. I guess it worked for me because I felt like the movie put me in the mindset of the time, where Tesla was pushing the limits and nobody really knew how far technology could go. I'm not watching it as someone who knows how electricity works and what it can and cannot do, if I was I think I would agree with it being worse than The Illusionist.

Both good movies anyway.

They're both kinda gimmicky, but I found the Prestige much more interesting overall. David Bowie as Tesla was more intriguing than anything in The Illusionist.

I thought The Prestige was a little better, but both are well worth watching. No need to choose between them, rent both.

I liked the prestige WAY better than the illusionist. The Illusionist is told like a fairy tale and I felt that at any time anything could happen, but the prestige seemed to really get into the nuts and bolts of prestidigitation. Everything seemed gritty and real at first which gave the abrupt departure from the rational at the end some extra punch. It's one of the few movies of this type where I correctly guessed the plot twist only to abandon it before the end because one of the characters did the same thing.

I'm inclined to wonder why people even consider The Illusionist to be in the same class as The Prestige simply because the look and feel of The Prestige was so much more satisfying to me.

They're very much different. Both are very good.

Employee of the Month was good for some laughs. Clearly filmed in a Costco.

I personally loved the beginning of the Prestige which is exactly why I hated the fact that it had to dive into the fantastic at the end. And the twist of the brother was too easy to catch. And Bowie was awesome as Tesla, his scenes were awesome, fun to just watch him talk.

Prestige= cruel harsh reality of magic, sort of likable ending; Illusionist = fairy tale, likable ending.

Prestige = Wolverine vs. Batman;

Illusionist = Edward Norton vs. Jude Law's Lookalike

Do you mean they are both great movies? Yes, you are correct!

I thought it was odd that both movies came out at roughly the same time. I would like to see more movies like that made. Can anyone suggest any other movies that use magic? All I can think of at the moment are the more Middle Earth kind of movies (LOTR, Eragon, Merlin) or Harry Potter.

The Prestige rocked The Illusionist.

I saw the twist in The Illusionist coming from a mile away.
