The features I'd want are basically the combination of the Dell Axim X51v and the HTC TyTN II:

* ~4 inch touch screen (w/ a stylus, not iphone style)
* 640*480 (or higher) resolution with good colors
* Windows Mobile 6 (and all the productivity & multimedia apps that run on it)
* 8 or 16gb of flash memory
* Memory card slot (SD)
* 128MB+ RAM, 400mhz+ CPU
* Integrated Bluetooth (w/ a2dp)
* Integrated Wi-Fi
* Tri-band UMTS/HSDPA
* Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE
* Integrated GPS
* 3.0 mega-pixel camera w/ flash & video
* qwerty keyboard (slide-out, HTC TyTN style)

This is the kind of phone I've been waiting for and would actually be willing to drop some money on.

What have you guys been looking for?

UPDATE: here is the list of phones that have most of the features above, but have a few issues that makes them fall just short.

* HTC Advantage x7501: this has all the features i want. unfortunately, it looks huge and is VERY expensive. still, it's as close as anything i've seen.
* E-Ten Glofiish x800: really nice looking device loaded with features, but it's missing a keyboard and has very little on-board storage.
* Nokia E90 Communicator: while wide, the screen is not tall (800x352), very little storage space, and symbian OS instead of windows mobile.
* HTC Universal (aka O2 Xda Exec, aka I-Mate JasJar, etc): discontinued, no GPS, very little storage space.
* E-Ten Glofish M800: this might be the one. only thing missing is on-board storage, but i might have to sacrifice it.

Well, you get all that in an HTC advantage 7501, but the screen is 5 in, so its a little hard to make calls with. Have to use a bt headset.

For me, Ill take what you're having, except since I live out in the middle of nowhere, Have it be CDMA EV-DO rev A, hell, even throw in analog as there are still some analog only towers out my way. And make it prop up like the Kaiser (TyTN 2) does.

I'm not uber picky, so my smartphone can drop the gigabytes of internal memory and the 3mp camera. I'm happy with 1gb and a 1.3mp camera.

The only thing I REALLY require is WM6 Professional, EVDO RevA (or GSM equiv), and a slide-out QWERTY.

(this is for the 7500, has WM5 instead of WM6 and has a front facing camera for video calling)

The 7501 comes with WM6 preloaded. The 7500 shipped with WM5, but a upgrade to WM6 was made avalible back in June. Other than the forward facing camera on the 7500 for video confrencing, they are both the same.

thanks for the info :)

this is definitely the kind of thing i'm looking for, although an ~$800+ price tag is a bit hard to swallow. I'll wait around and see if it drops and price and if anything similar comes along...

If you like the Advantage, check out the HTC Shift. I believe its not being produced yet, but will soon. A little bigger (7 in screen) than the size of the advantage. Its both a UMPC and a WM smartphone. Has a intel cpu and 30gb hd for the UMPC part and has an xscale cpu for the WM side. push a button and it goes from UMPC running vista to WM6 phone. Interesting concept.

wow, hardcore. unfortunately, the x7501 was already a bit on the large side, so this thing is probably well out of range. I want something i can carry on my belt everywhere i go, so while this is "ultra mobile" as far as pc's go, it's not quite in the category of "mobile phone" :)

I think you're pretty much spot-on. I use Sprint, so I'd want something with EVDO Rev.A or WiMax instead of HSDPA, but that's relatively minor. We'll just assume you mean "3G / 4G connectivity".

My changes and additions to the list:
1. 802.11abg (I like to use 802.11a at home)
2. Camera-less option (cameras are a pain for some people with certain jobs)
3. Dock with DVI/HDMI, ethernet, and USB host controller (w/ associated ports)
4. Long battery life
5. 600+ mhz CPU
6. 256mb RAM / 256mb flash

Pipe dream? Well, maybe.

The only part I think is a dream is long battery life!

just found out about the E-Ten Glofiish x500+... another device that comes close to what i want but just misses. if it had a qwerty keyboard and more on-board storage space, i think i'd be set. still, it seems like a pretty solid device.

one more candidate to add to the list: the Nokia E90 Communicator. downsides are that while the screen is wide (800px), it's not tall (352), there's very little storage space, and i'm not sure how i feel about the symbian os... again, close but no cigar.

and still one more close candidate: O2 Xda Exec. It seems to be discontinued, but again has just a few minor issues: no GPS, too bulky, and little on-board storage.

Even if I strip out the phone abilities - that is, search for just a pure PDA - if i can find all the features i want :-\

this may be the most reasonable candidate so far: the E-Ten Glofiish M800. VGA screen, windows mobile 6, sliding qwerty keyboard, wi-fi, bluetooth, gps, quad band, 3g, decent cpu, and what looks to be a reasonable size (unlike the x7501). only thing missing from my list of requirements is several gb of on-board storage (the m800 has 256mb), but i might just have to sacrifice that as *very* few phones seem to have it.
