I'm trying to make a better cucumber trellis for my garden. By nature cucumbers are a vining crop and perform better elevated off the ground. It also benefits the fruit because when they hang vertically versus laying horizontally the fruit is more evenly shaped as they mature.

So I thought about it for a few days then headed to Menards to purchase materials. I knew I wanted them to be lightweight so it was easy to move and I wanted something that was less porous than wood so diseases would not winter over from year to year and it also had to meet a certain monetary investment. After all these are just prototypes and may not work as expected but I won't know that for a whole season.

In the end I decided on PVC and chicken wire in an A frame fashion but with a larger "foot" to support the frame in the center as the vines get heavier and the fruit matures. We will see how well it works or how well is does not.🙂

I just have a couple of bits of twine strung up under the bottom shelf in the greenhouse with mine on! Yours is much more impressive!

I grew cucumbers only one season. Beginner's luck, the crop was prolific. I had found a package of cucumber seeds and had a gardening book and followed instructions. I made dill pickles, canned them in quart canning jars. What I discovered was that they wouldn't stay crispy for very long unless I included twice as much salt as I liked.

Looks kind of like my nightstand. Decades ago I built two tables, each had a top and one shelf in the middle. I made them out of Douglas fir and plywood. When I moved here I took them with me. I bolted them together one of top of the other. It has 4 horizontal surfaces. The top is about 5' 5" above the floor. I was going to paint the whole finished structure with a gloss white and told my roommate. He said "why paint it?" I didn't reply. I never did paint it!

Yeah, I thought about painting it, but I don't really care and it's not like anyone is going to be offended by the aesthetic of my home chemistry lab shelves. That won't be in their top 20 questions about the place.
 
sometimes it is the simplest tool. I hung up 2800' of aluminum extrusions,mostly with my brother's assistance. Partway through I dreamed this up. I found a 1/2" dowel, sanded a flat spot on it, drilled it and set a sheet rock screw in it for the lever.

you put it in using the flat spot for clearance, then rotate. It holds the extrusion you are about to screw down firmly to the one that is up. Viola, your hands are freed. I put up quite a bit by myself that way.

Bright idea! A few years ago I installed Hardy Board on the wall I totally replaced on my garage, all single handed. Needed to develop some solutions that worked for one guy with two hands and did.

I can't keep track of the vitamins. Keep hearing about new ones. Been taking P5P (an especially absorbable form of B6) since my carpal tunnel surgeries. Encourages nerve growth/healing and has other benefits. 😉

There's another special form of B6 that can heal kidneys. Unfortunately, it's been blocked by FDA for sale on the request of some dastardly pharma company over some patent issue.

If you ever need to hang Hardi again, invest in a pair of gecko gauges.
