Looks like something Gizmo J would spend ALL his lottery money on!

And probably get radiation sickness too.
If any place can get you stuff to cause radiation sickness, you've come to the right place.

I have a couple of 1-2 inch diameter "marbles" made from uranium. I stuffed them into a hole in a mini pigeon hole rack. I don't think that they're horribly radioactive though.

Anyway, central NJ has a lot places where the radon gets above the 4 picocuries/liter remediation level. My house hovers right around that. I'm still waiting for the genetic mutations that will let me "Magneto" slow drivers in front of me off of the road.

Do some nice experiments with that radon. Don't let it go to waste.

Just bought some insect mist, and eucalyptus/cedarwood mist. Also some soap to get my order up for free shipping...

I'm posting to ask a question that isn't worth it's own thread. This company always alters the amount I pay AFTER I pay them. It's always a couple cents. No big deal, but I'm wondering why. Is there a technical reason they could be doing this? Maybe security? The electrons used to alter the payment cost more than the alteration itself :^D

i don't even know what equipment I would need to do that. JK, though. I understand.

It would be interesting to get some dry ice and build a little cloud chamber.

Today it's a fun way to expose radiation from cosmic rays but cloud chambers were one of the first ways to detect radiation - very primitive by today's standards but if you're involved with youth education in some way, it can be a very dramatic way to make invisible radiation observable.

If I had to guess, sounds like a software bug that only materializes in accounts with a zero balance.

Sometimes with old software, workarounds are a lot cheaper than fixes.

Maybe things have changed (doubt it :( ) but there's a lot of old code that goes through processing every day and beyond being undocumented, is missing any source code.

Ah, the days of 'seat of your pants' "rodeo-style" coding. Yee-haaaa.

j/k I traded in a coupla phones and got like 700 off. This device is awesome. It survived Jerry Rig Everything's brutal tests.

It still blows me away. I pretty much hate smart phones and can't fathom paying $2k for one. It breaks my heart paying $200 for one that only lasts for 4 or 5 years.

I feel the same, it's hard to sink even 1k into something with built in planned obsolescence like a phone. Phones have such short life spans. Lucky to get 5 years out of one before everything is outdated or it just starts acting sluggish or battery stops lasting. I think of some of the big ticket tech items I've bought over the years and most got a good 10 years. I look at my NAS for example, I kinda had buyer's remorse after I sunk 3k into it, the case alone was 1.5k. But 10ish years later it's still serving me well and probably going to for another 10 years.

I need to see this $1500 case.

I hate buying smartphones, but I love taking pictures, so I always end up with expensive phones to get the best cameras. I like to get a solid 5-8 years out of a phone, and I have to imagine the improvements have slowed down quite a bit, so maybe 10 years at this point?

Wouldn't the pictures be better if instead of spending that much on an expensive phone with good camera, you got a $200 OK phone and spent the rest on a good digital camera?

Yes, without a doubt, but I'd have to carry the camera around with me and I have to give the phone folks credit, they're a great form factor and they're really great at quick pictures without setup.

There are two limiting factors. First is software support and that's 7 years max (but worse for budget models).
But long before that, the battery is going to age. The good news is that for iPhones and other popular models, you could pay someone for an economical battery swap.

You're right that the improvements have slowed down a lot, so in theory the hardware could reasonably stretch up to 10 years.

But considering that most people run their entire lives on their smartphone, I wouldn't want to continue using one long after the OS becomes unsupported.

Supermicro 24 bay case, with redundant PSU. There's not a lot of sites to buy server stuff here in Canada anymore so if I had to buy another I'd probably end up buying off Ebay, they are a bit cheaper there but not much, due to shipping. Add about $1,500 for actual hardware to go in. That's not counting drives.

The only non-stock app I have is one to interface with my car's computer. I'm a bit of a luddite :p

I don't use mine much, so I'm hopeful it will last a while. I moved away from Samsung because of their weird update policy, but I can't bring myself to buy an iPhone.
