Was looking at Focal headphones but they are pricey, hence went with the Neumann NDH30. What would you recommend for a tube amp up to around 800? Thinking of getting one later next year. Currently have a Burson Soloist MkII as it was reviewed as a warmer sound, though not tube level. Have always been curious for when I eventually get a second amp. Any suggestions? Woo Audio? Cayin?

Part of me thinks I should just get another set of headphones to complement the T90 and NDH30's and my bassy JVC's vs a tube amp but it's definitely a coin flip now.
I have no exp. with Woo audio but the Cayin HD-1A Mk2 would be an excellent choice in that price range. Very nice sounding with el84 output tubes, and selectable output impedance ranges. But not a current model. You can get them for $700 +/- on ebay. But they all seem to come from Japan so you will also have to get a small step down transformer cuz 100v ac. Besides the 2 Cayins I also have a Vallhalla2 , Xduo TA-26, Topping A90D, Nobsound NS-06E. The 2 Cayins are easily my #1 and 2 out of the ones I own.

Yeah. Imagine when, in the future, he wants to play Call of Duty XVII: Wild Wet Underwater Warfare, and doesn't have enough system RAM. Wants to put in another DIMM, BOOM, won't-boot. What-cha gonna do then?
Doh! Didn't thought of that! Oh well, I will just tell him.. no gaming until you get your GPA to 4.0, score a 1560 on SAT, and get into UC berkeley/UCLA or Rice university!

Or RMA the DEFECTIVE motherboard you PAID FOR that may well have other problems too using the normally included WARRANTY?

Not only is it entirely possible the motherboard will be unstable and/or fail prematurely, a single DIMM will trash gaming performance.

Or is the above all just crazy-talk to you? ;)

Honestly, I'm just as appalled (or maybe more) than Captante and VirtualLarry that you are doing something that most techies would consider blasphemy. You are trusting a mobo that has a faulty component! And you are not going to RMA it because it's working fine now. It somehow slipped through their QA/QC (person on the job must have been drunk or high or pissed at ASUS) and who knows what else might fail on this mobo. I know the RMA process might be a hassle and may deprive your kid of a few days of fun but it may lead to more trouble after the warranty expires than you may want to deal with. Or maybe you will just go out and buy a new mobo when that happens. I mean, if that's the plan, OK. Then I understand :)

My wife is getting a new Pfaff Performance Icon sewing machine tomorrow. It is on a massive inventory clearance sale and they had just serviced her current machine and gave her ~2k in trade in. She vacillated until I pointed out all the beautiful gifts she has made and pleasure she gets from her hobby. YOLO and time > money. It does many things her machine does not, most notably the built in dual feed. This solves a whole lot of tension problems when dealing with various layers of material.

Christmas was needed, practical gifts, think warm slippers, flannel shirts, underwear, new boots, sneakers, razor blades, the cat got a new scratch post ( the last one lasted over 2 yrs & was torn to shreds, lol) got a deal on a knife block set for my son & he got a new phone in the fall at a huge discount as his was old and on the way out.

It was a quiet but nice Christmas, just the 3 of us and the cat 🐈‍⬛ just glad to be together and alive.

KA SHING!

I was not really in a position to spend this kind of money but I just spent $2,258.87 on a new snowblower. Straight to the credit line along with the wood stove lol. My Ariens has been giving me issues for a few years, I will get it working then it will fail for a while, and it's always a battle to get it going each year. If I had a proper shop area I could spend more time to fix and tune it up etc but I have a feeling it's something major this time, and either way I had been eyeing going electric for a while so...

I just bought the 80v Greenworks 2 stage snowblower that just came out this year. Been looking at lot of reviews of the Ego and Ryobi versions and they all seem good. Saw a brief one on the Greenworks one and it seems good too. I may need to make one myself as I feel the video would get good hits if I'm one of the first. My main concern was if the electric tech itself is good enough and it seems they've gotten at a point where it is especially if I consider my lawnmower, chainsaw, electric shovel, that I've had zero issues with.

I will still try to get my Ariens one going and if I can I will see if I can get like $500 or so for it. Even at the time I bought it I was kind of hoping they would come out with electric ones eventually but they were not quite there yet.

Can't wait to get it and try it out. Comes with 3 4ah batteries too, and those will come in handy when I do firewood since they fit my chainsaw. I have more than enough batteries now that pretty much any job I'm doing I will always have enough run time. This snowblower is most likely going to be quiet enough that I will be able to use it late or early as well which is a big thing for me given my shifts. Often times I would neglect doing the driveway especially when getting home from night shift and sometimes I can't even get into the driveway because the plow went by. Now I'll be able to do it without waking neighbours.

Momentum 4 are on sale for $275 now - worth?

I've had the replacement Momentum 4's for a few days now and have been using them heavily. They work perfectly and are a really good headphone. Going from listening to my desktop setup to the true wireless buds and headphones is a bit of an adjustment for my ears, but once I get that brief brain burn in, the sound of these is really good for the package. I kicked up the mid and high frequencies a notch or two on the EQ and that's it. Been busting out little dance moves when walking the dog, they have been good for phone calls when walking even with traffic noises on certain streets. They have been pleasant at home on the couch or in bed as well. Definitely worth 275

I started modding the already repurposed sewing desk for the new machine.
It is an old walnut veneer over solid ash, I think. Our friends gave it to us, and I repurposed it immediately into a sewing desk. First step is locating and drilling in the corner radii with a hole saw, then I plunge cut between those with my worm drive saw and sliced it out. I've done all that and routed that step for the insert. The new machine is too tall to keep the drawer bottom intact, so I knifed that out. The drawer stays as just a shell with the pencil organizer in the front.

I got the support structure built and installed. It's 0.125" low as shown. I have some luan skin to go zero or 0.25 ply to go a little high.
The bottom is some 15mm BB from the kitchen job, the sides are 12mm marine ply. It's glued and finish nailed together and hung to the desk with screws.

Cut the corner off for fishing in the cords

The drawer still functions as a pencil tray. I blocked it off with a little what-have-ya from the barrel of shorts. It opens no further due to the shelf.

I'll cut a cardboard pattern for the insert that goes around the arm of the machine.

Claxton fruitcake is my favorite. I've had fancier fruitcakes, but they didn't taste as good as Claxton.

Nah, I was joking. Already started a RMA with Asus.

I can't believe people actually eat fruit cakes!
When i was young and broke I viewed christmas fruit cake as free food for a few weeks some winters. That was back when every family had their own secret recipe. Most used to have booze in them, some were absolutely legit food like a high quality energy bar. Considering the effort put into them, I figured someone had to appreciate them. I never tried the factory made stuff, though.

Back on subject, I bought another old but good Thinkpad W500 for another portable audio workstation, and Stray for my gaming machine. I'm enjoying being a cat.

I'm always running out of smartphone juice in the middle of meetings & whatnot, so I sprung for a power bank battery that has built-in floppy cables, which is really convenient:

Features:

* $38 shipped + 10% coupon
* 33,800 mAh battery (4-dot blue LED charge level indicator) * Based on the comments, it's over 100w, so not TSA flight-friendly in all areas FYI
* Dual-LED flashlight (steady, SOS, strobe modes)
* 2W Solar charging (I doubt this does anything haha)
* 15w Qi charger built-in (drop the phone on top to charge!)
* Physical ports: Micro-USB (charging input, 5V/2A), USB-C (bi-directional 18w charging), USB-A (22.5w) * 5V/2A = 10w max, so USB-C charging is the fastest method for charging the bank itself
* Built-in charging cables: USB-A (charging input 5V/2A), Micro-USB (5V/2A), iOS Lightning (5V/2A), USB-C (output only, 5V/2A...I kinda wanna plug it into itself just to see what happens LOL)
