A birthday card for a family member. Had to venture into an actual shop for it - first time I've been in a shop for several months.

I really hate the palaver around birthdays - having to find a decent card (even in normal times when it doesn't involve risk of death) or come up with an idea to make one...having to think of something non-banal that can't be misinterpreted to write in it, maybe having to wrack one's brains for an idea for a present (and then later feeling bad when you realise you spent several times as much on their's than they did on yours when your birthday comes around, and then feeling even worse about the fact that you feel bad about that fact, a kind of meta-bad-feeling). It's the stress and effort rather than the cash that is the issue, though.

And, worst of all, it's never-ending, it's pretty much always the birthday of someone you know. And God forbid you forget one. Birthday presents are rarely worth as much to the recipient as they cost the giver (not just in money, but in mental effort and stress), in my experience.

Then don't. I don't.

Set new expectations. Tell them you think it's a waste of money and you'll just wish them "Happy Birthday" however you chose to reach out to them.

That's a good question. I couldn't even guess, but I imagine there's a lot of oil in a tree. Did a search before hitting the button, and found this...

At Giles and Kendall we employ a sustainable process that minimally impacts the environment. We harvest only carefully selected trees that have fully matured, since only mature trees have the properties required for our quality products. Consequently, we are careful to avoid harming other younger trees when we harvest because we are conscious of our environmental impact. Additionally, much of the harvesting is done by hand thus preserving traditional land-use practices. Furthermore, we use the entire tree to make our wood products and Virginiana Cedarwood oil. Nothing goes to waste. Even the bark serves a purpose.

Well, the coffee's A+. Some of that is probably the novelty, but it's a good combo, and makes a good water flavor.

The coconut is good, but not different enough from other coconut offerings to stress about availability.

The mojito is kinda meh. Not bad, but I don't think I need to get it again.

Dunno if it'll be tomorrow, but I'm gonna stock up on the coffee flavor. I wish it were more generally available.

I went to Sprouts today, and bought some toiletpaper. They didn't have what I wanted, but it looks like I'm gonna have to explore other brands, since the kind I want appears to never be returning. I got some stuff made from biowaste of the sugarcane industry. No trees! Comparing that to the 100% recycled, it was a bit cheaper, so I figured why not? I didn't examine the package carefully in the store, and just looked it a minute ago. Made in China. Actually, scratch that. Made in PRC. Trying to get clever posting the country of origin. I wouldn't have bought it had I noticed. First off, fuck China. Secondly, I don't appreciate companies trying to obfuscate the fact their junk came from China. Even if it's amazing, I'll never buy it again...

I just ordered a 60 roll box of 1k sheet 7th generation toiletpaper. I'm tired of waiting for stuff to showup locally. That's way more than I need, but I'll be good for the next few years.

I haven't had it in awhile, but I think it'll at least be acceptable. My biggest wish is that it's wrapped in paper, and not plastic. Plastic is wasteful and pointless. A bonus is it's 100% recycled content. A good bit of preconsumer content, but anything's a plus. I don't actually have a problem with using trees. They're a renewable resource, and it isn't like people are wiping their asses with old growth redwood. They mostly come from farms that raise trees as a crop. Closing the recycling loop's good though, and it turns something that's otherwise trash into something useful.

OK, so I learned some things about Steam.
when it uninstalls games it has a tendency to leave tons of data behind. Like in my case about 2 terabytes.
moving junk to the recycle bin took about 10 minutes.
emptying the recycle bin took 5 minutes.

Got a NEC PC Engine Duo (AKA Turbo Duo) for $95. World's first game console with a built-in CD-ROM! These universally have bad capacitors inside but I've fixed them up before and this one looks relatively nice inside. It's clearly never been serviced but that's a good thing in my book since the majority of work before was trying to fix additional damage after others attempted to refurbish it themselves.

Instacart & Amazon Fresh, people still gotta eat, lol!
This, very much. Amazon Fresh and PrimeNow are amazing.

Being in Nashville, Amazon already has facilities here and they are building more. I can now order things off Amazon Prime that are delivered same day by 10pm or overnight by 8am.

I ordered a few small keystone connectors for my home theater project at 1pm. They are already out for delivery and it says 6 stops away on the live map, lol. That's just normal Prime, not PrimeNow. It's crazy.

Got my toiletpaper today. Holy shit 60 is a lot of rolls! :^D That'll last about 60 months in addition to the ~8 months of paper I already had. Think the supply chain will be straight by then? I'm not sure...

I'm still at it with the Home Theater upgrading. DIY cabling and other odds and ends this week.
  • Mogami W2930 (2 Channel Snake) - Making 2 cables for 2 sub amps (4 total subs)
  • Mogami W2931 (4 Channel Snake) - Making XLR snake for Atmos Crown Amp
  • Mogami W2932 (8 Channel Snake) - Making XLR snake for 7 Channel ATI Amp
  • Techflex - For snake cable protection
  • (15) Neutrik NC3MXX-B (Male) XLR Connectors for snakes
  • (15) Neutrik NC3FXX-B (Female) XLR Connectors for snakes
  • Panamax M8-AV-PRO (Surge Protector that will turn outlets on/off with a 12v Trigger. Awesome because once I turn on/off my pre-amp, the amps will do the same.)
  • (2) Honeywell Home T9 Smart Thermostat
Going to wrap this project up by Wed. so we can enjoy it for the long Labor Day weekend. All of the cabling will be here Monday and then it's going to be a lot of soldering and cable building!
