I think Rita is pretty much dead as storm. I'm about 60 miles from the current eye location and there's not a lot going on. Just a steady moderate rain and the occasional wind gust at the moment.

You're forgetting the rain. Someone's going to have a whole lot of water falling out the sky over the next few days.

Odd thing about the hurricane ... there was no lightning or thunder. Storms around these parts always have an unhealthy dose of lighting. Yes there was some strong gusts but the rain was spread out over enough time to avoid flooding, and the power stayed on.

I'm glad it turned out to be a non-event this far inland. With the drought conditions in these parts the rain was quite welcome.

getting last band in Baton Rouge... everyone i talked to still has power, we def didnt get hit as bad as katrina even tho we're on the east side of the storm this time

I'm in downtown Baton Rouge and didn't lose power. There are 2 massive trees leaning on houses across from my apartment.

My buddies in Prairieville lost power around 1AM last night and had it restored today around 7PM.

Hurricanes don't usually have lightning according to what I've heard on TV.

Hmm.. Really?

I thought they were pretty much a huge, extremely well organized thunderstorm...

The Clouds are moving so fast there isn't much time for the setup (slow build up of extreme electrical energy like a massive battery post) and release of lightning discharge between cloud to ground.

However there is some cloud to cloud sparks now and again but light in nature so it's a silent lightning.

Well the Texas Governor said today that Rita wasn't anything like Katrina but I'm sure that will not stop Texas from getting the lionshare of Federal Financial dollars.

9-25-2005 Gov. Rick Perry said Sunday that the damage inflicted by Hurricane Rita paled in comparison to Katrina

BEAUMONT, Texas - Gov. Rick Perry said Sunday that the damage inflicted by Hurricane Rita paled in comparison to Katrina, but urged evacuees stay where they are until local officials say it's all right to return.

Southwest Louisiana on the other hand:

In southern Louisiana, rescue crews searched for people still stranded by floodwaters. Hundreds may still be trapped in Vermilion Parish's far-flung regions near the Gulf of Mexico, according to Jason Harmon, spokesman for the Abbeville Fire Department.

Officials said calls for help were still coming in.

I just read on CNN's website that Texas has zero casualties from Rita. Excluding that bus of senior citizens that burned during evacuation procedures.

That is great news.
I believe a lot of it is due to the devestation in NO from Katrina. There's no way people would have taken Rita so seriously if they hadn't seen what Katrina did just a few weeks ago.

Well, this is my first time being online since deciding to ride out Rita in Houston. I'm posting from work, since my home has been without power for almost 2 days now. But there was practically no damage to speak of at my abode, and family is safe and sound, if a little cranky from the heat the last couple of days. All in all, we were very lucky this time around. 🙂

A small section of The Causeway Bridge unused turnaround roadway was washed into Lake Ponchartrain. It was only used by Cell Tower equipment. The guys had to get to the equipment by ladder yesterday.

The road deck was lower so the wave action was able to float the deck away.
