Watched the movie last night. Like Battle Royale + 1984, really. Acting was a bit iffy at times, and the camera was very eclectic (almost as bad as Cloverfield) but it was pretty good.

Not a very pleasant movie, but I enjoyed it.

Holy fck this movie blew. It was the Running Man that got Twili-tized, what's next, teen Terminators with teenage female T-X + male T1000 who fall in love before killing the human race?

While barely being able to see most of the movie from the shaky cam, I was wondering how much money the author made off this pile of heaping sht of a movie. Seriously, if boys today are watching this stuff then I weep because the guy in this movie had zero nuts despite possessing above average strength (which was never utilized once during fight scenes where the girl saves him every time). It was really pathetic to watch this chick flick that I was dragged to see. Prometheus can't come out soon enough...

Just got back from seeing it. It was OK, was about 30min too long and every single action scene was done with terrible shaky cam. Also some of the decisions the tributes make are simply retarded.

They said that most would die of natural causes, but not very many of them did.

I saw a bunch die with no cannon shot...including about 3 in a very short period.

Lots of bad editing and continuity errors. The girl immediately started climbing down toward the cloud of deadly wasps, but they were all gone when she got down. The dead people had no remaining wasps on them. Her companion was down there with the same people who got stung and died, but he didn't get stung. In another scene, I saw her draw her bow and exhale, then it cuts to her drawing the bow again and exhaling again.

Her little kid friend was snared and making a lot of noise, and died quickly because of it. They weren't far away from people who were chasing after them. Instead of leaving the area, she stuck around and grieved, then made a small memorial. It doesn't seem like she was taking this survival thing seriously...so why should the viewer take it seriously? It was later revealed that other people MUST have been in the area to see Rue die...but they didn't take advantage of Katniss' vulnerability. Doesn't make sense.

Read the books. First book was "okay" and the other 2 were bleh. First book had some really bad writing, but wasn't bad enough I couldn't get through it. The second and third books were horribly written. Scenes jump around, shit just happens without any lead up or characters do things without reasons behind them. Was very frustrating. The love triangle was stupid and made me want to slit an emo kid's wrists.

I think the biggest problem I had with the books with the premise. The "story" has been done plenty of times in different ways. Really, if you think about it, it's nothing more than a gladiator version of Lord of the Flies. All the other stories mentioned thus far in this thread have the same concept. Only thing is I like the premise for those concepts much better. The premise for this one seems ridiculous most of the time. Completely ridiculous.

Besides a bad premise, horrible writing, and a love triangle that tries to match Twilight in stupidity, I still thought at least the first book was decent. I have no idea if the movie will be good. I'm leery of seeing it, but when I saw the good reviews for it so far being posted on Rottentomatoes and IMDB, I'm now a bit more curious as to why.

Looking for a decent movie to watch this weekend with the GF. Trying to decide between Hunger Games, 21 Jump Street, and The Raid: Redemption.

This is the post of a reasonable human being.

yes, i almost had a seizure, sitting in the front row of IMAX didn't help of course

FTFY.

I don't think I'll be watching this one.
From what I gather, it's watered-down summer action bullshit with a bad case of shakey-camera cinematography.
I think I'll go see 21 Jump St. in the theatre, and wait for this to arrive at the local library. (Not sure if I will even go see that, as I don't think it will be any less enjoyable on DVD)
I am sort of on the fence, though, because this seems to be a movie that would benefit from being shown on a big-ass screen.

I agree with all of this, also

She never should have had a chance to drop the bees. This group of kids who are there to kill each other, chase her into a tree. She has no weapons, they have many. Instead of hitting her with the weapons, or setting the tree on fire. They sit and wait under the tree and all go to sleep!?? WTF they are supposed to be trying to kill each other!?

Also right before that they tell Peta the only reason he is alive is so they can find Katniss. Yet when they find her, instead of killing him, they fucking listen to his suggestions!?

Honestly the story premise of the dystopia, and the games, and her inspiring hope or whatnot is not too bad. All of the action and fighting is a nonsensical mess.

I thought 21 Jump Street was good, and worth seeing if you like some juvenile humor.

Hmm, such humor is getting rather long in the tooth for me, but I might still enjoy it.
Roger Ebert gave it a 3/4, and I agree with his critical analysis most of the time. (I've recently started reading his reviews of movies I've watched, and his praises and criticisms are much in line with mine)

There shouldn't be a need to. If the movie is good then it should be able to stand on its own.

I've read the book(s) and haven't seen the movie yet.

With that said, I fully agree with you. There should never be a requirement to read the source material before watching the film. The film should stand on its own.

You shouldn't have to read a book in order to watch a movie, as others have pointed out. If the movie can't stand on its own 2 feet, then it isn't worth watching anyway.

You think everyone needed to read The Shining before watching the movie?

Negative.

My only real gripe with the movie is the cinematography. It's annoying after a while with everything being so zoomed in.

for those complaining about the tracker jacker scene, they changed it so much from the book that yes, it didn't make sense, it made sense in the book

hah you know...i was thinking the same thing. it's like the whole movie was shot with a 150mm lens. that and the shake cam definitely made the movie less enjoyable. whoever invented shaky cam cinematography should be shot in the face!
