I worked a year after high school, 3 jobs, to save money, but eventually ended up moving down to my school for a summer semester so I wouldn't be so far behind.
During that summer before moving into the dorms I lived in an apartment with a guy who had graduated from my HS a couple years before me which was pretty fun.

The weekend before orientation we treated ourselves to thai food from a local joint. I got Pad Thai with chicken, and something in there was not right. Fever, puking, diarrhea, exhaustion... I was not well.
I had started to feel a bit better, but knew I shouldn't bother with the orientation. I called the office to make sure this was OK, and being a young impressionable lad, believed the b!tch when she told me that attendance was mandatory, and there was no way I could miss out on it.

The morning came, and I wasn't too bad, bit wobbly, but I took a shower, and headed out to walk the couple of blocks to the student center... I arrived, and started chatting, making friends. We were given a "5 minute to presentation" warning and the smokers among us headed out for a last cigarette.... As I sat smoking, I began to feel a bit rumbly... "oh no", I thought, "this isn't good".. it progressed, and I was feeling pretty faint as I rose, I knew I couldn't make the bathroom, in a bit of a haze I headed toward a trash can...
I didn't make it.

There, in front of the entire freshman class, I passed out, and somebody thoughfully called an ambulance, But that's not the best part....
Even though I passed out, my body had already commited to urgent evacuation, so when the paramedics found me in a ragged heap next to the garbage bin, I was covered in my own vomit. They cut off my shirt and transported me to the hospital for fluids and observation, where my roomate was kind enough to pick me up the next day.

Perhaps because of this, or my own inability to overcome the embarassment and detachment I felt from my classmates along with a bunch of other factors, my college career was short-lived. A year later I dropped out. That was thirteen years ago...

I am only posting this because I have just finished my pre-reqs from a junior college and am transferring to a univesity to finish my degree. Today is my orientation, and I feel fine.

Cheers, wish me luck :)

Cliffs:
- Ate bad thai food
- Went to orientation sick
- passed out and puked all over myself in front of entire freshman class
- dropped out at the end of the year, that was 13 years ago
- Just finished at a junior college and am transferring to uni.
- Today is my orientation

Update: Made it through without puking or crapping myself.

...Score one for me!

:)

Poor baby. :(

I wonder if you didn't go out for that smoke if things would have been different? I know you had food poisoning, but do you think that cigarette brought out the worst of it?

That's a great anecdote. I hope that your embarrassment was not the sole reason for you dropping out of school the first time around. That would be just silly...

That's good. I skipped my orientation which was about 3 years ago next next week. Some people get body painted purple at them. Still no regrets.

Possibly, nicotine does cause the stomach and esophagus to do odd things...
But I had already had a couple by then, this was back when I was a pack a day smoker. Not having it might have postponed puking, but I doubt it would have saved me completely.

Quit smoking 7 years ago. Still hav an occasional cigar though. :D

And to answer a couple of questions. I'm starting an accelerated Psych program, I'll have my bachelor's in 11 months from an accredited college
There were lots of contributing factors to my dropping out.. I'm not that pathetic...

If it works I'll be the first of my paternal line to earn a degree... they're all dead though.
