I don't quite understand the "too long" statements. If you like the story, how can it be too long? If you don't like the story, why are you watching it?
Whatever was drug out was still very entertaining. It's not like they went grocery shopping or something.

I really wanted to like the first one, but it was twice as long as it needed to be. Throwing in all the backstory that Tolkien didn't put in his story doesn't make your story a better story.

I enjoyed the first movie simply because I am a fan of the novels and I like the setting. However, I was really disappointed with the way the addition of Radagast was handled and to a lesser extent with the mountain rock monsters. Radagast was Peter Jackson's Jar Jar Binks moment. In the novel the rock monsters weren't moving pieces of mountain but rather giants throwing stones off in the distance.

I hope the second one is better. Can't wait to see Bilbo's conversation with Smaug.

Or the scene with Frodo and Galadriel at the mirror, when he offers her the ring and she momentarily turns into some sort of green glowing witch with an electronically modified voice.

Part of Tolkien's genius was that his world was _not_ filled with flashy effects and magical spectacle. How many times did Gandalf even use overt magic in the entire series? Not that many.

I saw the HFR 3D version and it was greatly improved over the first one as well. It only took a few minutes before I didn't "notice" it.

mostly agree with this. i dont love pj as a director but he could be worse. sometimes.

going to see part II today with the kids, 3d IMAX in raleigh. hopefully it will be fun

the 3d imax viewing was pretty cool. like some parts and not others, dont feel like getting into spoilers now really but:

i liked the confrontation between gandalf and sauron a lot more in this than i liked that craptastic wizard-whirl between he and saruman in the LOTR film.

I saw it yesterday. It was quite captivating and the 3D actions was pretty good, however to me LOTR trilogy was more well done.

I would give it 8/10, while all 3 of the LOTR series are at least 9/10 in my book.

Repeatedly tried, but can't FORCE myself to read those books...so I'm virgin to the movies, with no preconceptions.

Desolation in big screen 3D was generally excellent, and W-A-Y better than the irritatingly cutsey 1st movie.

Fight scene action made up for time-fillers like the bear guy, the spiders, Gandolf v Orcs in the ruins ...which all seemed like useless time-wasters to me but maybe those are there because people who read the book(s) would look for those and enjoy them?

I didn't mind that kind of stuff even in the LOTR. Elves were pretty much badass super warriors even in the books. Imagine how good you'd be if you had thousands of years to train?

I thought the scenes within the elven city were as well done as those in Lothlorien from FOTR. Thranduil was especially well portrayed. I also liked Tauriel much better as a character than Arwen from LOTR. Maybe because as a silvan elf she seems less aloof and dramatic than the high elf Arwen.

Orcs don't bleed? Elves don't sweat? I know what you're saying, but the fight scene felt like the creators spent more time on how cool they make the elf cartoons move, instead of adding the aspect of realism that some may look for.
