The investigation was closed by Trump political appointees despite a mountain of evidence.

Some disturbing excerpts:

"Five days before Donald Trump became president in January 2017, a manager at a bank branch in Cairo received an unusual letter from an organization linked to the Egyptian intelligence service. It asked the bank to “kindly withdraw” nearly $10 million from the organization’s account — all in cash.

Inside the state-run National Bank of Egypt, employees were soon busy placing bundles of $100 bills into two large bags, according to records from the bank. Four men arrived and carried away the bags, which U.S. officials later described in sealed court filings as weighing a combined 200 pounds and containing what was then a sizable share of Egypt’s reserve of U.S. currency.

Federal investigators learned of the withdrawal, which has not been previously reported, early in 2019. The discovery intensified a secret criminal investigation that had begun two years earlier with classified U.S. intelligence indicating that Egyptian President Abdel Fatah El-Sisi sought to give Trump $10 million to boost his 2016 presidential campaign, a Washington Post investigation has found.

Within months of learning of the withdrawal, prosecutors and FBI agents were blocked by top Justice Department officials from obtaining bank records they believed might hold critical evidence, according to interviews with people familiar with the case as well as documents and contemporaneous notes of the investigation. The case ground to a halt by the fall of 2019 as Trump’s then-attorney general, William P. Barr, raised doubts about whether there was sufficient evidence to continue the probe of Trump.

[...]

Investigators had also sought to learn if money from Sisi might have factored into Trump’s decision in the final days of his run for the White House to inject his campaign with $10 million of his own money."

Well if I know one thing it's that conservatives who were outraged at the idea of Hunter Biden taking money from foreigners will be lining up to condemn this!

Either that or they will say that unlike Hunter, in order to condemn this we must wait for the entire investigation, indictment, trial, and conviction to happen. (and if those do happen it will be because of bias against Trump so that won't count either)

We should ask greenman for his insight.

What's the favourite conservative catch-phrase around here?

"I'm trying to spare myself from having to take a moral position, so 'if convicted then something justicey should happen' "?

I thought it was "I can't make a reasoned opinion based on available evidence, only a court of law can help me decide. Also I'm going to rush to judgement on a completely unrelated, but dear-to-conservatives issue. No, I don't see the irony."

Good old Billy Bar's name keep popping up as directing the prosecutor to end the investigation and told Wray, who by the way, was appointed by Trump, to corral his agents trying to investigate it.

Mueller investigated this series of events, but by the time they finally got through the court process to learn about the withdrawal, Mueller was wrapping up his investigation, and passed it on to a US attorney, Jessie Liu, who had been appointed by Trump. Liu struggled with deciding whether to subpoena Trump’s bank records to see if he had any suspicious income in 2016 or early 2017 that would match this Egyptian withdrawal. In 2020, Bill Bar replaced her with his ally Timothy Shea, who put the investigation on hold. A few months later, he replaced Shea with Michael Sherwin, who shut down the investigation. In 2022, the statute of limitations expired.

The events are definitely suspicious, Trump loves his bribes and taking undisclosed cash. But at this point there's insufficient reason to pursue a pointless investigation that would allow Trump and his cult more reason to bellow about persecution. Maybe pursued by a journalist, at the least to expose more shady dealings by Trump.

If Trump did this and got away with it, it is almost guaranteed he will try it again, so I hope the appropriate authorities are keeping an eye out for stuff like this. lookout for cash coming from North Korea and such.

Trump - "Sisi is my favorite dictator" Asking Trump about this and grilling him further on his love of dictators would be reasonable and might generate some interesting, demented responses

You know who should be more pissed off? The person who decided the amount to bribe Trump is ten million dollars. Putin, Xi, and Kim only had to flatter the guy. Didn’t cost them a "red" cent.

But they all have nukes. Egypt’s got…well ...sand?. And $10 million to blow. And, likely, fewer tapes or photos of Trump doing things Trump doesn’t want revealed.

Sadly, that 10 million was a significant portion of Egypt's sovereign wealth just to give you an idea.

He stole 2016, that is why he CANNOT let go of 2020 and hopefully 2024 were stolen from him.

He did it once, and can't imagine why he couldn't do it again. That is where the Big Lie comes from.
