according to the graphs in the article http://graphics.tomshardware.com/graphic/19981007/index-02.html and my own personal experience you get much smoother gameplay with vsync on i.e the frames remain relatively more constant than with vsync off.

also the results the guy took in the thread support this theory , otherwise the FPS are all over the place.

personally i would have vsync on and get constant 30 to 40 FPS then FPS which go from 40 to 85 to 60 in a few seconds.

Yet another reason why the LCD is blamed for inferior gameplay. The tearing is much more noticeable since FPD's are driven at 60 Hz. Unlike a CRT where the refresh rate is also the rate that the light from the phosphor that one sees is driven, the CCFL on a FPD is driven at a very high frequency so flicker is never perceivable.

I often wonder what a FPD that had a 100+ Hz refresh rate capability would look like with v-sync off. It would be expensive as the card would have to be custom unless it was run analog - yuck! Of course if it had BNC inputs like good CRT's did...

My X850XT "pumps" when v-sync is on. Lots of scenes can be rendered at FAR greater rates than 60fps but the card is forced to stay at 60. It makes it seem like it's lagging or pausing so removing v-sync is the only way to go. It's blazing fast but then you have tearing. Oh what to do???!
