This is how my morning got started on Thursday. Check the links. Turn up the volume... I uploaded these directly from my phone so the video sucks extra hard... but it's really the audio that makes the video worth while... heh.

Background... there was a storm brewing that morning. It took two hours to get clearance from the harbor master to leave the harbor.

I sat in the front of the boat while we were heading out of the harbor. Who'd think that first class would be the WORST place to be on the boat? It's not worth the extra $20 to get a free beer at 6:30 in the morning.

(True confession - was in first class the last trip - knew what it was like up there. I hopped up to first just to take these vids because I knew... It was better than I could have ever imagined)

It was raining about 3" per hour and the winds were blowing at about 40mph. The waves were about 25-30 ft. The first video is us coming out of the harbor and into open water. (calm, calm, calm... whoa!) It's hard to tell in the vid but if you weren't holding onto something when the boat was going down the waves you would go airborn. That's me laughing... everyone else was screaming. One guy puked. He didn't last a minute.

I had to put the camera down after a minute and a half in the first vid because it took both hands holding onto the table in front of me to keep me from flying out of my chair. One of the waves launched a refrigerator across the floor in the main gally. The snack counters were pretty much destroyed. Donuts everywhere! Hahaha... The gift shop looked like a yard sale. We didn't make it five minutes out of the harbor before the captain turned it around. (second link)

So remember kids... The Hawaii Superferry is AWESOME and a must see when you come to the islands!

Enjoy!

It was... I had to pull it down... youtube was dicking with the audio when I uploaded the files originally. The video sucks but it gives context to the audio which is paramount to understanding the situation in this particular case. ;)

I can't view the videos now because I am on a ship as well (with slow as hell internet, and I have youtube blocked so no one else can use it... just imagine 256kbps connection shared between 5 vessels, with each ship with anywhere from 30 to 60 people).

I've seen my fair share of crazy waves, but I'm anxious to see this video, as I've never seen people actually panic and throw up all over the place haha.

Haha I know the feeling but mine is 1Mbps. :p Must be all those NYE-KON cameras taking pictures of the moon last night. That moon rise was a beaut!

Anyways, in Miami this morning sipping wifi from the port. Speedtest.net shows 5mbps BOTH WAYS! :D It's faster but the B network only goes so fast. Still beats 700ms latency of the satellite but I much rather prefer moving to being tied up.

Back to the topic - well that's what they get for SPEED! Get some head seas of 10-15 feet and you gotta slow down in that thing or she's gonna punish you BAD! That will learn ya!

Oh and I've seen my fair share of bad seas 30-50 feet and a freak 77 foot "rogue wave" on April 16, 2005. That was scary beyond words...

LOL damn it... the females; they never forget our petpeeves and weaknesses :(. Sigh, and now you're rubbing it in with the whole internets speed comment :(. I won't see any relief until I'm done with this expedition about a month from now.

I've never encountered a rogue wave, and hope I never will. arg, if only this video was hosted elsewhere. Maybe I should sift through that crazy long blacklist file in the proxy server just so I can view it... anyone have a mirror or another site? Preferably the file size is tiny as well.

Wow, the ferry is expensive. Isn't it cheaper to fly?

(I assume that's $60 one way and not round trip)

I LOVE being on the water...but days like that are just...special...

I've been on a couple of off-shore jobs west of San Francisco and Half Moon bay when the water got...bumpy...and during storms that were too bad to leave the barge...not much you can do but make sure everything's lashed down and ride it out.

We haven't been on the Superferry...yet, but have been on the Molokai ferry when it was bumpy. woo-hoo...what a ride!

It's about the same really. A cheap on-way on Hawaiian is $60. A cheap one-way on the ferry is $49. I take the ferry for work. We have a house we're working on over there so we pack up the van and head over. It's just easier... except on days like that. I ended up flying back that day. My co-worker took the ferry back the next day. That trip was pretty much a whale watch. Glass all the way back. Go figure.

Do locals still hate it? The past two years I have surfed over over by and in the harbour, they weren't shy to express how they felt every time we saw it mid morning. Especially the Waiehu locals.

Way to stick it to the hippies. I watched some program on one of the science channels about the HI superferry and people protesting. There were hundreds of surfers blocking the route. Do they still do that?

When I was in Sydney, the ferry from Manly to Circular Quay crossed an opening in the bluffs that got full sea waves. One evening it was pitching so badly that when you looked out the windows on the other side, you'd see nothing but sky alternating with nothing but water. The waves were coming broadside so they had to keep zig-zagging the ferry so it wouldn't capsize. I have an irrational fear of deep water so it was quite the rush heh.

Why isn't things like the refrigerator bolted down?

Because it isn't necessary. They are usually stocked with booze and it takes a LOT to knock them about. Then again if the fairy was wearing boots this would not have happened!

It was bolted down. It broke loose. I would have thought the screaming would have been an indicator as to just how violently the boat was pitching.

I wish I could have... I needed my free hand to hold on to the table in front of me to keep from being thrown around. Holding on with one hand wasn't cutting it.
