Edit: I should also say, the MMO's i've played, or remember playing, in no particular order. Everquest, City of heroes, City of Villains, Everquest 2, World of Warcraft (And all expansions, though enjoyed each one less and less), Eve, Warhammer Online, Tera (Beta), GW2 (Beta), Lineage 2 (very briefly), Champions Online, Rift (Beta), FFXI, FFXIV (The crafting was good...and graphics, not much else..), Vanguard, SWTOR, Etc...i'm sure i'm missing one or two others...like earth and beyond...

Edit 2: The secret world...they just keep coming.

Edit 3: The original Guild Wars, All Points Bulletin: Reloaded, Global Agenda (kind of fun little game! Though not too heavy on the MMO part). I won't get into anymore of the Free to play games.

WHich one of these is closest to what you want?

Diesbudt,

Perhaps i am just feeling nostalgic, but i really think a game along the lines of Vanguard, or Everquest is something i am really interested in. They have the most potential to be a deep game that would capture my attention, with plenty of exploring and crafting thrown into the mix.

Also, i will never understand why crafting is catered to people that do not enjoy crafting at all. I really enjoyed the depth of crafting in FF14, although i wish it did have some of the mini-game type stuff that EQ2, and Vanguard both possessed. Crafting can be fun, and it helps to create a thriving economy if it is done correctly.

At least it is refreshing to know i am not alone, if you even mention anything like this on a WoW forum, or anything negative about GW2 at all, people go after your hide...

Perhaps i will look further into darkfall, but the graphics are going to be difficult for me to swallow.

Edit: also, to the dude who mentioned FFXI, i really did enjoy that game, but kind of fell out of love after a few months...I played when there were literally so few americans playing that it was difficult to find a group. This is why i preordered FF14....man did they butcher that game though :(.

I played swg when it first came out, I really liked it's crafting system except for the way the minerals rotated between the planets... That seemed lazy to me. I would have rather there have been a 'mining consortium' and you bid for lots capable of setting harvesters on and have other areas be manual collect only.

Was a fun game though.

I tried out Vanguard over the weekend since I saw on Steam it was free. Last night I subscribed - that says a lot I think.

There are plenty of n00bs running around, and the chat channels are pretty active. It doesnt feel dead to me at all. I've really been drawn into it - it's what modern MMOs are lacking. Scale, complexity, total open world, a real sense of adventure. I subscribed because I WANT it to be revived, and it wont be without paid subscriptions.

I am a DAoC vet and havent found anything since that really grabbed me, but so far I love VG and suggest people give it another shot. If they fix the lag bug I really feel it's an amazing game.

With it being F2P, no reason not to.

What it truly needs right now is a strong population. I selfishly would love to see you and thousands of others DL it, because I think that's really all that's lacking right now. Well, that and the lag bug, but I think with a growing population SOE would throw more resources at it.

Its an amazing game and its pretty active right now...no reason not to give it another shot for free.

Are you playing F2P or subbed?

I started it first day F2P went live, but it seemed like something i would have to sub soon if i wanted to advance, i like the game but not enough to pay 15 a month.

The problem with Darkfall is that, at least when I tried it, it was just a glorified medieval setting first-person shooter.

The reason I want to play an RPG MMO is to get away from mindless twitch action gameplay and instead play something more strategic where my decisions and stats and equipment factor more than my aim with a mouse.

Is this changed at all in the relaunch, or is Darkfall still a first-person shooter?

Played Vanguard for about three months a year or two ago, and have DLed it agains since it went ftp. Happy to report, I had an issue where something went wrong, sent in report, and their support promptly fixed it. Also, looks like they have been hiring for the team that works on it, and bug fixes and new content seem to be in the works.

Vanguard is like a beautiful piece of fossil amber, with a gem from the past held in suspended animation.

I began as F2P. I ended up subscribing more because I want to see the game succeed, and without paid subscriptions it will not. So it's more a show of support than a result of any restrictions. That said, yes, the classes are limitied for F2P, as well as the items. I chose a human disciple as I wasnt sure I'd end up subscribing, knowing that char/class combo would allow me to level to 55 without paying if I chose.

It seems like IF you choose a race/class combo that's F2P all the way to 55, then the rest of the restrictions arent that bad.

On the official forums, the devs have actually posted and they are indeed working out the bugs. I played for 4 hours last night completely bug free. It also does sound like a large content addition is planned for level 50+players.

I'm really hoping this goes well, because I want VG to succeed. It has a depth and a degree of difficulty that is sorely lacking in modern MMOs, IMO.

Yes!! Agree totally.. I really enjoyed early EQ2 as well, even after WoW came out. My wife found an old EQ2 strategy guide when Desert of Flames came out, and we wre just talking about how much fun that game used to be..

Vanguard sounds interesting, I never have acually tried it.. I do remember a few of my Eq2 friends reccomended it highly, but it petered out and died for some reason..

If its coming back, maybe ill give it a look. As you mentioned, community is very important. Nothing more depressing than a barren MMORPG :p

By all accounts, it died because of bugs. It's still al little buggy but not horrendously so that I've seen so far, and SOE is actively working on what remains.

I'd say it's at a tipping point - there's a lot of interest in the game right now, and if if SOE fixes the bugs fast enough then I think it's going to end up with a nice population. Right now there are plenty of noobs running around. I've joined 3 pickup groups at low-level dungeons the last 2 days just playing casually and while not even LFG.

Honestly, I played last night 4 hours straight with no lag and no other bugs and had a great time doing it.

I will say this, I strongly VERY STRONGLY advise new players to skip the newbie island. (The game gives you a choice before you start) The lag there is worse and IMO it wasnt nearly as interesting - felt like the same old tired MMO stuff.

The racial starting areas harken back to the old-school MMO days in my opinion and was a LOT more fun and had a lot more sense of being tiny in a huge world.

If anyone wants to look me up, my in-game name is Kulolin.

Uh... stats and equipment always mattered. It's still first person twitch, so in that sense if you miss your target, all the stats and gear in the world won't matter. That said, with the changes/introductions of class specializations there will be more varied abilities now which will improve the strategy of combat quite a bit.

Yeah, I just don't find that fun. WTF is the point of having a dexterity attribute, for example, if hitting and missing is determined by the player's dexterity rather than the characters?

I guess I can understand that it has a niche following of a certain type of player, but it's not for me.

Well the good news is there is a full character/server wipe for the "sequel." And the extra good news in your case is that you can come back to check it out for just the cost of a one month sub--they aren't charging original owners for the "box" again.

As far as cheating... I had a huge issue with the early on exploits that put some people way ahead in character stats, which is why I'm really glad they're wiping characters. I don't recall too many serious cheats other than the radar hacks, though, which are a pretty big problem for a game like this. However, I don't remember a lot of duping going on.

How were the Mercs able to field so many warhulks and have so many people with multiple elemental skills at 100 that quickly? :)
