A
California woman has been charged with bringing several weapons — including a “short sword” and a “tactical whip” — into the U.S. Capitol Building on Jan. 6, 2021, according to an
FBI affidavit.
The woman, Kennedy Lindsey, took a flight from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C., sometime after Dec. 19, 2020, when then-President Donald Trump used social media to
urge his supporters to be in Washington on Jan. 6 for a “big protest.” “Be there, will be wild!” Trump wrote.
The FBI affidavit says Lindsey traveled to Washington with another California woman, Danielle Lacy. The document says Lindsey attended Trump’s speech at the Ellipse, a park just south of the White House, and then returned to her hotel to get her backpack. From there, the affidavit says, Lindsey and Lacy approached the Capitol Building on a golf cart.
The document then presents a timeline of Lindsey and Lacy’s day at the Capitol, using surveillance footage as well as clips recorded by Lindsey herself: Shortly before 3 p.m., as she and Lacy neared the Capitol, Lindsey said, “Everyone is storming the building, folks… We must do this as Patriots. It says so in the Constitution.” Around 3:15 p.m., as nearby rioters attempted to break a window to get into the building, she said, “We’re taking it back, motherf—ker.”
Lindsey entered the Capitol Building at 3:31 p.m. by jumping through a broken window; investigators were able to identify her on surveillance footage due to her outfit, which included a “Make America Great Again” cap in signature red, a camouflage backpack, and a red, white and blue plate carrier vest. A video she recorded shows she found herself face-to-face with police in riot gear, and she says in the clip that it “smells a lot like pepper spray.” At 3:36 p.m., the women left the building through the Senate Wing door.
The affidavit says Lindsey was approached by a member of the U.S. Secret Service at about 5:25 p.m. for “suspicious behavior involving a large metal pole.” The agent told the FBI that they saw a weapon strapped to Lindsey’s leg, which she described to the agent as a “short sword.” She told the agent she had other weapons on her as well, per the affidavit. The agent searched Lindsey and her backpack and found a steel tactical whip, a collapsible baton, pepper spray, a butterfly knife and a flashlight taser.
The
Associated Press reported that Lindsey was arrested in Los Angeles last month. The affidavit says she faces charges of disorderly conduct and carrying weapons inside the Capitol Building. Lacy is also facing a disorderly conduct charge.
A voicemail left by SFGATE at a number listed for Lindsey was not immediately returned.
