The guys over at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution...

The only categories on there that I'd really agree with are best new club, best bbq, and possibly best neighborhood bar (although can a chain really count as a neighborhood bar?). Mellow Mushroom is good, but not the best in Atlanta. Ru Sans is ok, but only because lunch is cheap; definitely not even close to the best sushi in the city. Same goes for Maggiano's and P.F. Chang's...both are overpriced and not all that great. La Grotta is INFINITELY better for Italian food (hell, even Olive Garden might beat Maggiano's), and I could probably think of a half-dozen better Chinese restaurants (go to Buford Highway, randomly pick a place, and it'll not only taste better, but will also cost half as much).

All in all, it seems like the author just picked the most well-known establishments in each category, tested them each out, and then chose whichever seemed to be more "in" at the time.

Welcome to reality...it's the media...of course they are going to choose to report on the "in" places at the time.

While Ru Sans is not bad, it is far from authentic and far too noisy. It's a great place to go out with friends, but definitely NOT the best for sushi.

Most of the winners and finalists were large chains instead of individual restaurants. When Olive Garden, Red Lobster, Pizza Hut and Papa Johns are among the finalists, you can tell how bad this list is. 🙁

Also sorry to say-- Atlanta just is not known for it`s cuisine!
It`s not a travel hot spot where you would say to your spouse-- Honet there are so many award winning restaurants to go to the cjoice is oh so hard!!

There are plenty of good restaurants in Atlanta, if you know what you're doing. It's a city of millions, and you say there aren't any good restaurants? That's way beyond ignorant. Maybe you can't afford the good restaurants, but that's your problem.

Try Vinny's up in Alpharetta (if it's still there!). Last meal we had in Atlanta before leaving for Texas several years ago and well worth the $150 bill.
 
The paper didn't pick the winners - people voted on it. It says more about the worthless people here than the paper (but I agree that the paper sucks - they should've known this would happen and just picked the restaraunts)

My local paper did that a few years ago. The votes had to be mailed in - no online voting (and if there was online voting in Atlanta, I'm surprised we didn't see "ATOT effect wanted, vote for the pizza shop I deliver for") Most people can't be bothered to mail in votes. Although the circulation (for my local paper) is only between 10,000 and 20,000, (compared to the circulation in Atlanta), it appeared that they received *very* few entries. My old boss sent in one in his name, and one in his wife's name. Startlingly, every place that he selected on both sheets ended up winning. EVERY place. And, being the anal retentive guy he can be sometimes, he had a photocopy of what he sent in to show us. In other words, he and his wife were enough to form the majority. I'd estimate that in Atlanta, they received a total of 30 or 40 people voting. And quite simply if any restaurant wanted to win, they'd simply stack the ballots by having each employee send one in (believable for places like pizza shops, not as likely for places that don't feel a need for artificial prestige)
